To confuse things further there is no medical agreement on whether younger women would benefit from mammograms.
Several recent studies show mammography can significantly reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer for women age 40 to 49.
Mammography is not a perfect science. Pre-menopausal women do have dense breast tissue which can complicate finding tumors.
Mammography can be so sensitive that it can find suspicious abnormalities that ultimately turn out not to be cancer.
A panel of experts convened last month by the National Cancer Institute was concerned these false positive results might create unnecessary anxiety.
