A Roanoke jury says the death of Jesse Ferguson should cost Cepada
(se-PAY-da) Wiley eight years of his life.
Jurors convicted Wiley of voluntary manslaughter last night.
They reconvened and recommended the prison sentence this morning.
Wiley took the stand, and told the jury he was willing to "do his time", and
try to put his life back together.
His attorney asked for leniency.

The judge revoked Wiley's bond and sent him to jail.
He ordered Wiley separated from other inmates, after the defense expressed
concern that some of the victim's friends might also be in jail, and seek
A 21 year- old Carroll County man is charged with murdering his roommate.
Teddy Roe Dixon and 50 year- old William Charles Epperson lived together in
Epperson's son asked sheriff's deputies to check out the house because he
hadn't seen his father, and a witness had noticed Dixon driving Epperson's
Deputies found Epperson dead of gunshot and stab wounds.
Mount Airy, North Carolina police spotted the truck and arrested Dixon.
At the time of the murder, Dixon was free on bond on a kidnapping charge in
18 current and former students at Roanoke College face charges following an
incident near Carvins Cove early Tuesday morning.
But today, some of them said it was not a case of hazing.
The members of an off- campus organization were in General District Court
They all face charges of trespassing. Ten are accused of hazing, and four
of being drunk in public.
They were arrested on property along Timber View Road near Carvins Cove.
Roanoke County police found four of the students blindfolded, lying face
down in four to six inches of water.
Today, members of the group declined interviews, but some said they were
A man accused of beating to death his roommate on Christmas Eve told police
he acted in self defense.

a fight inside this Lynchburg motel room December 24th.
33- year- old James Michael David is charged with Moye's murder.
He claims he was sleeping when Moye attacked him, and he retaliated.

some local veterans were in court today to support him.

In a little more than two years in business, McGuire has taken in about 400

Ten-percent interest plus handling and processing fees didn't bother her.

McGuire says it's not fair to lump the processing fees in with the
principle amount of money borrowed to come up with an interest rate of 334%.

A half dozen children escaped harm after their house caught fire this
afternoon in Lynchburg.
Firefighters say everyone got out of this home on Rivermont Avenue after the
blaze started in an upstairs bedroom.
Crews had the fire quickly extinguished, but rush hour traffic has been
slowed as they continue to mop up the scene.
Lynchburg firefighters also had their hands full trying to control a fire in
a vacant store this morning.
Around 6, a passerby spotted flames coming from the rear of this building on
The blaze spread quickly to the second story and attic of the wood- frame
Crews spent close to an hour containing the fire.
The building once housed a grocery store, but most recently was being used

Some salaried employees at Volvo- GM Heavy Truck Corporation are pushing for

A move by Signet bank will result in two branch closings in our area.
By the end of the year Signet says it will close its Pulaski and Galax
In all the Richmond- based bank is eliminating 15 branches.

62 employees will be affected, and 47 of them are being offered other jobs
with the bank.

Employees of a Roanoke Dry Cleaner were startled today, when a car came
crashing through a plate glass window.
It happened early this afternoon at A Cleaner World on Brandon Avenue.
The car was parked at Little Caesar in the lower level of Towers Shopping
It drifted backwards across the parking lot and four lanes of traffic
before hitting the building.
The owner of the car, Oscar Hackworth, says he is simply thankful that no
one was injured.
