break travel package apparently went sour.
A railroad conductor was shot in the back with a pellet gun as he rode
through Pittsylvania County.

More than 100 are from Virginia Tech.
Students from Tech, Appalachian State and UNC-Greensboro all booked the same
spring break trip to Cancun.

The father of another Tech student called us and said his daughter is
stranded tonight with another 150 Hokies at the Baltimore Washington
Representatives of Take A Break Travel and Surf N Sun say they've scheduled
a flight to leave the Raleigh Durham airport around 2 a-m.
But the airport says it has no ground crew on duty.
Martinsville police are searching for an inmate who escaped early this
Officials say Issac Swanson was hiding in a shower, and overpowered a deputy
who was bringing in a prisoner.
Swanson and another inmate got out of the building... the other inmate was
caught near the jail, but Swanson escaped.
He's described as five feet, 11 inches tall, 175 pounds.
Officials say Swanson has a history of assaulting police officers and is

A railroad conductor was shot this afternoon while riding through
40 year- old Robin Lynn Safrit was riding in the front of the train when a
shot shattered a double pane window and struck him in his upper back.
It happened near Chatham around three- thirty this afternoon.
Authorities believe it was either a pellet or b-b gun.
Safrit was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The train was hauling mixed freight on its way to Crew, Virginia.
Flames hit a abandoned home in Roanoke City this evening.
Fire crews were called to the two-thousand block of Rorer Avenue around
The house was already fully involved when they arrived.
Fire officials say the abandoned house has been set on fire several times
The blaze is being considered suspicious.
It is under investigation.
Those Tech students who didn't head out for spring break, piled into Cassell
Coliseum to say goodbye to their coach.
Bill Foster led the Hokies into the Cassell for the last time this

Norfolk-Southern and C-S-X may be close to ending their battle for Conrail.
Sources tell The Washington Post that Norfolk Southern and C-S-X will split
up Conrail's rail lines under the proposed deal.
It says the agreement could be announced this week if it is approved by
Conrail's board of directors.
The deal would end Conrail's Eastern monopoly and give C-S-X and Norfolk
Southern direct access to New York.
C-S-X has offered to buy Conrail for 110-dollars a share in cash and stocks.
But Norfolk Southern proposed a hostile offer of 115-dollars a share in
Conrail's board of directors supported the C-S-X deal.
But in January shareholders rejected a proposal to proceed with the C-S-X

have died, another 11 are still missing tonight

homes and businesses.
The disaster overwhelmed some towns -- uprooting trees -- overturning mobile
homes and tossing cars...some into the branches.
The twisters left big electrical towers twisted and mangled.
The storms closed some roads and shut down Little Rock Airport.
The death toll continued to rise and hospitals treated dozens of injured
Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is requesting federal disaster relief funds.
He also spoke with president Bill Clinton about the destruction in the
president's home state.

In Louisville, where a foot of rain fell, disasters converged.
A house burned down today because firefighters were blocked by floodwaters.
The storm killed seven in Kentucky.

Three people died from tornadoes there, two died in Ohio, and one person was
killed in Mississippi.
The storms left hundreds of people homeless.

Uninsured drivers will soon be getting more attention from the Virginia
Department of Motor Vehicles.
Its computers are now linked up with insurance companies.
All motorists who have dropped or changed their policies since January First
have had their information sent electronically to the D-M-V.
Previously, D-M-V officials and insurance companies shared paperwork
That meant the agency sent out 12-hundred random notices a day to drivers
asking them to provide documentation that policy information provided on their
registrations was correct.

written about the area.

The Virginia Cavaliers will enter the A-C-C tournament on a positive note
after knocking off 16-th ranked Maryland this afternoon in Charlottesville.

It was senior day for Jeff Jones and his Cavaliers.
The game was close in the first half but Harold Deane takes it to the hoop
drawing the foul and giving the Cavaliers a one point lead.
Maryland went up by four but Curtis Staples hit a three pointer and the

The Terps rallied to open the second half Laron Profit takes it to the

Wallace had a strong car in the race and he was crusing up front ahead of
