Statistics indicate Virginia is the NEW number one source-state for guns
used in crimes in New York City...but how accurate are the figures?

The politicians pulled up some numbers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
and Firearms...where Virginia emerged the NEW number one provider of guns used
in New York City crimes.
But Governor George Allen's office and the ATF say those statistics aren't
complete-- and are lacking the "street age" of the guns.

The average age of a gun seized in a crime is six years old.
Virginia's one gun a month law is only four years old.
The A-T-F suggests gun-runners may visit West Virginia, where sales are

In Botetourt County, a huge drug supply was found OUTSIDE a drug store.
During a routine patrol early this morning, 219 pounds of pot were
discovered near a Daleville Revco...at the back end of the Mountain View Plaza
The drugs were wrapped in layers of plastic, newspaper and dryer sheets...
and hidden inside duffel bags.

Sheriff Kelly says if the marijuana had been divided up into small
quantities, its street value could have exceeded 900- thousand dollars.
It appears the two Virginia railroads Norfolk Southern and CSX will end
their four month old fight for Conrail.
Neither railroad will confirm it, but according to several published
reports, Conrail's most valuable northeastern routes will be split up.

State police are still searching for the person who shot a conductor
riding aboard a Norfolk Southern train yesterday.
Authorities say it appears a b-b gun was used to shoot 40- year old Robin
Lynn Safrit (say-fritt) once in the upper back.
Safrit was riding in the front of the train when he was struck near Chatham
State police believe the shooting was not an accident-- but so far don't
have a suspect.

The train was on the way to Crewe.
The tornado ravaged state of Arkansas is getting a lot of attention from
the federal government today, as hundreds of residents try to put together
what's left of their lives after this weekend's tornados.

one day than in any year since 1968.
Arkansas' Governor toured a heavily damaged Little Rock suburb and talked

Sixth District Congressman Bob Goodlatte believes the residents of
Highland County have wom more than a temporary victory in their fight against
the U.S. Air Force.
Goodlatte says he was concerned the Air Force would merely extend the
public comment period on its plan for a dramatic increase in low- level
But with last week's announcement, the Air Force agreed to re-evaluate its

Spring break is finally underway for a group of Virginia Tech students.
About 170 students-- many from Tech, had been trying since Saturday to fly
to Cancun, Mexico.
Their Saturday morning flight never arrived... they waited, spent the night

Another group of Tech students was stranded at the Baltimore-Washington

With just two small additions, women are officially part of Virginia
Military Institute's educational mission statement.
The statement.. adopted in 1986.. outlines V-M-I's approach to educating

V-M-I hopes to admit 30 female cadets this fall.
If you're a Roanoke Gas customer, you could see a lower bill next month.
The company says its billing rate for homeowners will go down 11- percent.
That's on top of a six- percent cut LAST month.

Might yogurt be the other white meat?
The U-S Agriculture Department is planning to make yogurt count
as a meat dish in school lunches.
Yogurt's backers say it would add variety to lunches, be easy for kids to
digest and require no preparation.
But the change in U-S-D-A policy is no hit with cattle producers, who say

Tonight the top seed in the Colonial conference needed an overtime to put
away a pesky JMU team 62-to-58 on the tournament final.
CAA player of the year Odell Hodge was hungry for the one thing he's failed
to achieve in his college career - a championship.
But Odell would watch JMU take the early lead with Chatney Howard nails the
three pointer for Lefty's boys.
But Odell would wheel and deal inside and score on the layin as the two hit

And finally tonight, NASCAR has declared Rusty Wallace the official winner
of yesterday's Pontiac Excitement 400 Winston Cup race in Richmond.
A couple of hours after Wallace started celebrating his then unofficial win
in Victory Lane, NASCAR said that Rusty's Ford engine failed the postrace
compression test. In other words his engine had more power than his
