A new set of announcements lend more support to speculation that Virginia's
two major railroads will end their bidding war by carving up Conrail.
Conrail's board of directors has approved a revised agreement to sell the
railroad to C-S-X for 10- and a half billion- dollars.
A C-S-X statement hints that Norfolk Southern, one of our area's largest
employers, will get to purchase some key Conrail routes.
Industry speculation has N-S getting two lucrative Conrail lines that will
give it a foothold in New York.
Comments from N- S are equally optimistic.
