A five hour standoff tonight in Richmond- between police and a man
suspected of shooting two officers.
New developments in the Jon Bonet Ramsey murder case.

A suspect in the shootings of two Richmond police officers turned himself in
peacefully tonight -- after a nearly five hour standoff with the Richmond SWAT
Police fired tear gas into a house.
About 45 minutes later, 18-year old Alex O'Neill Carter surrendered.
Carter's mother assisted police in negotiating with her son for a peaceful
end to the standoff.

The other officer was shot in the abdomen.
Both are in satisfactory condition tonight.
A federal magistrate wants the government to hear from some of the
witnesses against Joe Abed and his reputed "organized crime" family.
Joe's son, Rod, appeared before the magistrate today- -asking to be released
Abed faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 30 years in prison for allegedly
starting fires with a molotov cocktail. He also has a HISTORY of violence.

The Abed's insist they're innocent. The government says it has as many as
30 witnesses in each of the nine arson cases.
A jury in Wythe County finds Eric Ball guilty of murder and abduction.
The verdict came down this afternoon, on the third day of the trial.

Ball and two others dumped the body of 17-year old Ricky Lee Coleman over a
creek bank last year.
An autopsy indicated Coleman had a high blood-alcohol level and died of

New developments in the Jon Bonet Ramsey case.
NBC News says a handwriting analysis of Jon Bonet's father, John Ramsey,
shows no match to a ransom note.
The network also reports that tissue, possibly human, was found
under Jon Bonet's fingernails, indicating she fought her attacker.
The broadcast also says
no semen was found on her body or clothing.
Meanwhile, investigators have obtained another handwriting
sample from Jon Bonet's mother.

Next month, he'll become Chief of Police in Wilmington, North Carolina.
