Sure, it's formulaic and predictable to some extent, but as disaster movies go, "Dante's Peak" delivers.

The movie gives the audience time to connect with the characters, particularly Pierce Brosnan as a geologist who is certain the mountain above the little town of Dante's Peak is going to erupt.
Linda Hamilton--the beleaguered mayor of the town-is caught between local politics and fear of disaster.
The special effects are truly spectacular and mimic the effects of the Mt. Saint Helens eruption.
The scientific slant is interesting too--not only the monitoring technology, but the geological changes that occur with a volcanic eruption.
"Dante's Peak" gets a "B". These visual effects make "Twister" look like a thunderstorm. cutopen
