Alexandria car dealer and eight year Lieutenant Governor Don Beyer makes it

He's been second in command for eight years, now Don Beyer wants to be
Virignia's top dog.
Today in a four city tour that began in Roanoke, 46-year old Donald
Sternhoff Beyer, Junior kicked off what he's calling the greatest adventure of
Beyer hopes to become the first non-lawyer governor in four decades.

But before Beyer was even out of the blocks, The Washington Post speculated
he'd have to raise taxes to pay for his education plan.

will not seek another term this fall.
Crouch first went to Richmond to replace her husband, Joe, who represented
the 22nd district for 12-years before he died in 1989.
Crouch says she's proud of her family's record of service.

Clinton could have been told the Chinese government might be trying to
influence U-S elections.
The F-B-I says it placed no restrictions on who was to be told, but the

Meantime, Chinese officials are denying allegations that China tried to
donate money to U-S political campaigns in the last election.
Federal prosecutors are refusing to put on witnesses in the racketeering
case against Joe Abed and his "organized crime" family.
U-S Magistrate Glen Conrad last week implied he might be inclined to
release Abed and his son, unless the government presents testimony from two or
three of its "best witnesses."
In its notice to the court declining to put on witnesses at this stage in
the proceedings, the government says Joe Abed lied last week in court under
A key element of the case involves extortion, threats, even murder.
The government points to ten earlier cases against Abed family members that
were dismissed in state court, because witnesses were intimidated.
"The very witnesses whose testimony would be most compelling," says the U-S
Attorney, are those people who are most at risk in this case.
A hearing is set for Wednesday afternoon.
A daily trip to the mailbox turned tense for a Roanoke County mother and
daughter earlier tonight.
A 10-year old girl jumped out of her mother's car when it rolled 150 feet
down Carolyn Circle in Southwest Roanoke County.
Police say, at about 5:30, the driver got out of her car to get the mail,
then the car started rolling...
and finally resting... after hitting two parked cars.
The child banged her head on the car door while trying to leap out.

The Citadel today announced disciplinary action against ten cadets for
allegedly hazing and harrassing two female cadets who resigned after saying
they couldn't take it anymore.

The Citadel Military School has passed another milestone in its court
mandate to end its all male status. Finally, a decision from a
MAJ. GEN. ROGER C. POOLE/ THE CITADEL INTERIM PRESIDENT: THE CADET'S WERE
INFORMED OF THIS DECISION AT 12:45 TODAY.
As a result of that announcement one more male cadet has been dismissed and
nine others face additional discipline in connection with the hazing and
harrassment of these two female cadets.
In sworn depositions Jeanie Mentavlos and Kim Messer complained their
clothes were set on fire, cleaning solutions was put on their heads and they
were kicked and shoved while in a closet, all by male cadets.
Two of those cadets have already been expelled, another never returned to
All tolled, fifteen cadets were involved, only one was exonerated.

Despite the controversy, school officials here say enrollment
is up ten percent and they have applications from over forty women, 28 of whom
have already been accepted.

Roanoke City Council may have trouble filling three seats on the school
board, but not because there's a lack of interest
Eleven people filed applications with the city clerk's office before this
School Board Chairman Marsha Ellison is seeking reappointment, but Marilyn
Curtis isn't eligible for another term and John Saunders is leaving the area.
City Council will choose among the candidates on May 5th.
Some Roanoke County residents don't think the Virginia Department of
Transportation's been STRAIGHT with them when it comes to removing some
dangerous curves on Route 221.
The area in question is just east of Cotton Hill Road.
VDOT is looking at bypassing that section entirely... and building a
straighter stretch of black top.
Some residents didn't think that was even an option.

VDOT officials say they have the right to explore this alternative plan.
But they say it could take months to figure out if its even feasible.
Some of the Star City's landmarks were designed by a group of architects

area projects like the City Hall Annex and Center in the Square-- but today it
focused on the future.

A new line of attack may have opened in the battle against Alzheimer's
The largest and longest study yet suggests a common anti-inflammatory can
cut the risk of developing Alzheimer's in half-- maybe even more.
The 15-year-study on aging found that anti-inflammatories-- like Motrin and
Advil, the Ibuprofen drugs, and Naperson found in Aleve, cut the risk by as
much as 60-percent.
Aspirin and Tylenol-type pain relievers seemed to have no effect.

The Associated Press announced the winner of this year's ACC coach of the
year honor tonight and not surprisingly, the votes were spread out throughout
Duke's Mike Krzyzewski was the winner though taking home 56 of the 119 votes
cast by members of the ACC sports writers association.

ski dummy race.
As you can see, the dummy designers go all out for this-- and what they
