Such a check would probably have prevented these murders. The viewer apparently believes that anyone, regardless of mental or moral deficiencies, should be able to buy and use a weapon on the basis of the Second Amendment. It should be obvious that there are some people whose right to "keep and bear arms" is subservient to the rights of citizens to be able to be free of the danger of unstable people with weapons. We can't allow any homicidal maniac who wants a gun to be able to buy one."
From our web page forum, a debate on geography.
"Why do the weather people always insist on referring to our part of the country as the Mid-Atlantic? The last time I looked at a history book, or listened to the people's dialect here, we were in the South! No, I think the weather people do a wonderful job keeping us informed...But you are doing all of our forefathers a terrible injustice when you call this the Mid-Atlantic."
Which brought this reply:
"I don't think Virginia was ever part of the stereotypical South: grinding poverty, hot climate, the Ku Klux Klan, and funny accents that grate unpleasant upon the ear, and sugary sweet women fanning themselves whilst rolling their eyes seductively. I like to think of myself as living in the best place on earth, where there are four seasons I am not hemmed in by tall, fierce mountains, where there are flat valleys and plenty of interstates waiting to take me anywhere I want to go...NO, I think to live in one of the mid-Atlantic states is to have the best of both the North and the South, without being smothered by either."

Virginia is seeing a steady rise in the population of state juvenile corrections facilities.
Part of the reason is an increase in youth crime.
The other is a get-tough stance that means longer sentences for young offenders.
In 19-91, about 13-hundred young people were in state custody.
Authorities said that population topped 18-hundred by 19-95.
But experts are worried that crowding means most troubled young people are NOT getting rehabilitation help.
