The number of hate incidents against gays and lesbians in Virginia were up
in 1996--a 206 percent increase from the year before.
That means 55 incidents-- four physically violent -- were actually reported,
compared to 18 in 1995.

Today the supervisors also said they're organizing flood relief.
They hope to send a group of county employees and volunteers from local
businesses to help out in communities along the Ohio River.
A group of churches in the Galax area has launched a flood relief effort
