A group of citizens in Wytheville IS satisfied with the school system's
plans to prevent FUTURE racial problems, but some worry progress is slow going.

The Superintendent of Wythe County Schools unveiled his plan tonight to
fight racism at George Wythe High School.
Jim Vaught is sending some teachers to a "Dismantling Racism" workshop,
along with some members of the Concerned Citizens Network.

Last month, several students were suspended for tying their drawstrings into

Federal and state police have arrested the last of the ten men indicted a
week ago in a major racketeering and arson case.
(Ah-mahd Thee-ahb) Ahmad Thiab was taken into custody at Dulles Airport
this afternoon, as he got off a flight from London.
Doctor Thiab had been living in Quebec, Canada.
Three years ago he was co-owner of Mixer's Restaurant and Lounge in Salem.

It burned to the ground in a spectacular blaze that federal authorities now
say was deliberately set by members of the Abed "crime family."
Thiab allegedly hired five of the Abeds to set the fire in an UNsuccessful
attempt to collect insurance proceeds.
Thiab has a doctorate in Political Science and holds joint citizenship in
Canada and Iraq.
JOE Abed's lawyer filed a motion today demanding that the indictment be
dismissed, citing appearances by federal prosecutors on Channel 7.
If it's not dismissed, Attorney Jack Kennett says U-S Attorney Bob Crouch
and his assistant Tom Bondurant should be taken off the case.

Bedford County residents assess the damage, while investigators search for
a cause in the smoking rubble of the Hardy Community Center.

The oldest section of the community center was built in the 1950s, and
eventually lead to creation of the fire department.
Members say they hope to rebuild.
It's not patient care-- but a personnel matter that's leading to an
of the Salem V-A Medical Center's director, John Presley.
Presley recently placed ASSOCIATE director William (Della-meeter) Delameter
on administrative leave.
Now a V-A appointed panel is investigating PRESLEY.
No word yet on exactly what the review's about.
But officials say it's necessary because both Presley and Delameter hold
such high positions.

Dr. Jain (Jane) expects the committee to complete its investigation within
the next few days.
A major retirement community for Lynchburg has been given the green light by
the city's planners.
Supporters and opponents of the project packed the planning commission
meeting this afternoon.
Developers want to turn this 400- acre patch of land into a retirement
complex featuring a nursing home, individual housing and supporting businesses.
Neighbors say they're worried the size of the project will create traffic
and security problems.

Governor George Allen says he supports belting children in the back

The government has a warning about a brand of children's rompers sold at

Little Miracles rompers for infant boys.
The commission says the red and orange paint may contain lead.

Virginia Tech women's head basketball coach Carol Alfano, found out yesterday
that her 19 year reign over the Lady Hokies was about to come to a close.
In the 80's it was almost unheard of for women's coaches to be fired, or

Mariners' pitcher Randy Johnson accidentally hit Snow in the left eye during
a cactus league game in Scottsdale, Arizona yesterday.
Snow was taken to the hospital where he underwent a battery of tests.
He has a fractured left eye socket, but doctors say the health of the eye is

He was released from the hospital tonight.
