An arson suspect with a link to Salem is arrested as he gets off an
International flight this afternoon.
(Ah-mahd Thee-ahb) Ahmad Thiab was taken into custody as he arrived at
Dulles Airport in Northern Virginia- -at the end of a flight from London.
Thiab is a joint Canadian-Iraqi citizen.

Three years ago the nightclub he co-owned in Salem burned to the ground.
A federal indictment returned last week in Roanoke charges that (Thee-ahb)
Thiab hired five members of the (ABBOTT) Abed "crime family" to torch the
JOE Abed's lawyer filed a motion today demanding that the indictment be
dismissed, citing appearances by federal prosecutors on Channel 7.
If it's not dismissed for prose-cutorial misconduct, Attorney Jack Kennett
says U-S Attorney Bob Crouch and his assistant Tom Bondurant should be taken
off the case.
After weeks of tension, the Wythe County School Board took up the problem of
racism at its school board meeting tonight.
And community members say they were there to keep the pressure on.

It's a project between researchers, 4-H'ers and school students- It could
revive the endangered American chestnut tree.
The trees made up a quarter of the Appalachian forests until a blight wiped
them out in the early 1900's.
Students at Narrows Middle School are among others in Virginia and 16 other
states who are planting seeds which may have some resistance to the fungus.
Researchers used controlled plots to crossbreed some chestnuts which have
survived the blight.

After the trees are planted this Spring, researchers will monitor their
progress to test their resistance in the hope of eventually stamping out the
A big acquisition is in the works for one of Southside's largest employers.
Today Tultex agreed to acquire California Shirt Sales, a firm that sells
Tultex shirts on the west coast.
The Martinsville- based company says the move fits well into its plan to
increase its tee-shirt sales.
It also brings Tultex closer to achieving closer it's long term goal of
something called "vertical integration".
Vertically integrated companies have their own raw materials, plus the means
of production and distribution.
The 1997 Martinsville/Henry County business expo is in full swing.
It got underway yesterday at the Patrick Henry Mall in Martinsville with
scores of local businesses taking part.
The expo is organized by the Chamber of Commerce- It's a way for business
owners to promote their products.
It's also a learning tool for area students.
Principals from several local schools have arranged for students to tour the
expo before it opens to the public at noon.
