Rescue boats dragged the river this afternoon after two witnesses alerted authorities.
One witness reported seeing a man sitting on top of the Peppers Ferry Bridge.
Another man sitting below said he heard and saw a large splash, but nothing resurfaced and he couldn't tell what had hit the water.
Dangerous currents prevented divers from entering the water.
The search has been called off for the night.

Three former workers say the State Council on Human Relations has decided to investigate their harrassment complaints against Al Alexander.
This, after an investigation from the S-P-C-A board in November.
DEBRA FLANARY, Diane Farren, and Melinda Chambers took their complaints to the board but were not satisfied with the outcome.
A board member says it conducted a thorough investigation and IS satisfied.
Alexander was suspended for about 10 days during that investigation.
When contacted by phone this afternoon, Alexander said the allegations were totally surprising and unfounded.

A new sports complex off Nationwide Drive would help eleviate the problem.
But the project is lacking investors and has even spawned a lawsuit from the neighbors who don't want the facility in their backyards.
Among the neighbors-- Lynchburg Mayor Jim Whittaker.
But he says the city wants to fix the problem, though it won't be done this season.
