Officials in the New River Valley are worried someone either jumped or fell
from the bridge in Fairlawn.
Rescue boats dragged the river this afternoon after two witnesses alerted
One witness reported seeing a man sitting on top of the Peppers Ferry
Another man sitting below said he heard and saw a large splash, but nothing
resurfaced and he couldn't tell what had hit the water.
Dangerous currents prevented divers from entering the water.
The search has been called off for the night.
Police say a Russian-born teenager is being charged with the murder of Ennis
The suspect is identified as 18-year-old Mikail (MAR-kuh-sez) Markhasez.

believed to be the murder weapon.
It was a tip received by the National Enquirer that led to the arrest.

The son of entertainer Bill Cosby was gunned down January 16th as he
changed a tire on his Mercedes convertible near an L-A freeway.
The Roanoke S-P-C-A's executive director is apparently being investigated
for a second time on sexual harrassment charges.
Three former workers say the State Council on Human Relations has decided to
investigate their harrassment complaints against Al Alexander.
This, after an investigation from the S-P-C-A board in November.
DEBRA FLANARY, Diane Farren, and Melinda Chambers took their complaints to
the board but were not satisfied with the outcome.
A board member says it conducted a thorough investigation and IS satisfied.
Alexander was suspended for about 10 days during that investigation.
When contacted by phone this afternoon, Alexander said the allegations were
totally surprising and unfounded.

The Veterans Administration has placed the two top men at the Salem VA
Medical Center on administrative leave.
The action against director John Presley and associate director William
Delameter came today, after a team of V-A officials completed a preliminary
investigation into what the hospital calls "issues of concern."

Presley and Delameter will remain on leave until the team can prepare a

Johnson stressed the people are not suspects- but they may have been in the

The hazing charges were dropped for 17 students in return for guilty or no

Carvins Cove one night last month.
The students say "it was all part of a "bonding experience."
Prosecutor Skip Burkart says he dropped the hazing charges because no one

The purchase of two new fire trucks is turning into a major controversy for
members of Roanoke City Council.
They'll decide next week whether to buy the city's first "quints," vehicles
that combine the capabilities of a pumper and an aerial ladder truck.
Salem and other communities have been using quints for years, but Roanoke
fire fighters believe the purchase is a step toward downsizing the department.

House Majority Leader Dick Cranwell helped engineer the tax cut in February.
In return, he won expanded benefits for those who lose jobs... and new legal
protection for workers who develop repetitive motion injuries.
The completion of a longstanding project is responsible for creating and

The Roanoke Housing and Redevelopment Authority announced the completion of
the second phase of the Deanwood Re-development program in Northeast Roanoke.
Three small businesses will move into the remaining space left in the

Glenvar and Floyd squared off for a 5th time this season tonight with a
state final berth on the line in Lynchburg.

readied themselves for the semifinal grudge match.
