Good evening, this is NEWS 7 at five, I'm Jean Jadhon.
It's been more than one month since the men waved goodbye to friends and
family... leaving for a mission that brought them to Bosnia.

Teresa Hamilton joins us from the National Guard headquarters in Danville,
with an update on the unit.
Jean, from what we've gathered it's been a tough adjustment for the unit
especially being separated from loved ones.

Sergeant Chris Bennett is among the 46- National guardsmen assigned as
The men arrived in Bosnia about a month ago but didn't officially begin
their duties until last week.
The Danville unit is taking over for a group heading back to Massachusetts.
A ceremony marking the occasion was held last week.

A six-year old Lynchburg boy is dead after his five-year old brother
accidentally shot him.
It happened at the Greenfield Apartments around 11:30 yesterday morning.
Police say the two boys apparently were playing with a .22 caliber pistol
when it went off, striking the older boy in the upper body.
He died about seven hours later at Lynchburg General Hospital.

The names of those involved are not being released.
Police have NOT decided whether to charge the parents for failing to keep
the gun away from the children.

Roanoke City Council members angered firefighters this afternoon when they
approved the controversial purchase of two new fire trucks.
On a four to three vote, council came up with almost 900-thousand dollars
to buy two quints, vehicles that combine the functions of a pumper and an
aerial ladder truck.
The Roanoke Fire Fighters Association has argued the trucks are part of a
plan to downsize the department.

The measure will require another vote at the next city council meeting but
it's unlikely any members will change their votes.
Last year a Roanoke company announced plans to hire hundreds of new workers.

But Innotech didn't need the luck of the Irish to make such a big splash on
Saint Patrick's Day.
Strong sales of its lens casting equipment has enabled the company to sign
off on a plan which will enable it to double the size of its operations.
The move represents a two- million- dollar investment by Innotech and the
company that leases out its headquarters.
Innotech expects to break ground in May and complete the expansion by the
end of this year.

Innotech founder Ron Blum is emphasizing that this expansion has been in the

A Montgomery County judge has acquitted a Virginia Tech football player
charged in the assault of a track athlete last fall.
Angelo Harrison was one of seven football players indicted after the brawl
He was the only one charged with a felony for allegedly striking Hilliard
Summner with a cane, and breaking Summner's collarbone.
Summner was the only one to testify Harrison dealt the blow.
Several other witnesses said they remember seeing Harrison at the scene,
although they didn't recall him holding a cane.
One of Harrison's teammates Tyron Edmond also charged in the incident,
admitted stealing the cane from Summner's friend and breaking it on the ground.
The judge said although "it was clear a group of hooligans viciously
attacked" Summner, the evidence did not prove beyond a reasonable doubt
Harrison was involved.
Timothy McVeigh's trial will begin March 31st.

Jury selection begins in two weeks.
St. Patrick's day is usually a celebration of smiles and shamrocks.
Today though a moment of silence before New York City's parade- to remember
the Great Irish Famine.
It was 150 years ago when one and half million people starved to death.

Three dozens Gays and Lesbians were arrested for protesting-
Homosexual groups have been banned from marching.
A man with a jug of gasoline and a cigarette chained himself to a bench
outside Roanoke's Poff Federal Building this morning.
Federal officials would not identify the man, but say he was upset about a
property issue and was apparently threatening to set himself on fire.
According to the Federal Probation office, the Wythe County man was on
probation several years ago.
His former probation officer was able to talk him into unlocking the chain
and giving up the jug.
Officials say the man never threatened to harm anyone but himself.
He was not arrested and the U.S. attorney's office says no charges have
been referred to their office.

The National Transportation Safety Board is getting an earful about air
bags-- especially as they relate to the safety of children.
The government is hosting a four-day public forum-- with the ultimate goal
of making air bags less lethal and having them deploy with less force.
At least 38 children and 24 adults have been killed by the devices.
Seven year-old Allison Sanders was killed instantly when her passenger side
air bag deployed in a fender bender.
Her father says reducing the force in air bags isn't the answer.
