The Danville National Guard unit is there to maintain that peace but the
group's also been trained for battle.
If a NATO unit needs to zero in on a particular target, it's the Danville

As Danville's Guard unit settles into life in Bosnia, a militia group back
home has some words of warning.
The Virginia Citizens Militia says it's an umbrella network representing
scores of local militia groups statewide.
Its message to Virginians serving in the military is: do NOT leave the
country... serving overseas is a trap from the New World Order.
A spokesman says its NOT a one way street -- the militia gets regular mail
from Guard and Reserve members.

for state politics.
Party chairwoman Sue Wrenn says Republican candidate for governor Jim

A Halifax County man convicted of killing his wife and another couple has
been spared the death penalty.
A Halifax County judge today sentenced Raleigh Dean Martin to life in prison
plus 48- years.
Martin was convicted last year of shooting and killing his wife, Marion, at
Prosecutors say the same night, Martin killed a couple who lived nearby.
Joseph Siffert, Junior and his girlfriend Barbara Hackney were found dead in
Authorities say the couple's infant daughter was also in the house, but
Henry County authorities are investigating a late night shooting.
Sheriff's investigators say the victim, a man between 20 and 30 years old,
was discovered around 11- thirty last night.
He had been shot several times.
Authorities say the man was found dead on Valentine Court, a subdivision
located in Henry County.

George Cartledge Senior died Sunday at the age of 87.

Valley business leaders that charted its growth.

Five years ago, Lynn Owens was going to college and working two part- time
jobs in Roanoke.
She was also homeless.
Today, she's part of a new city team reaching out to those living on the
Owens is a member of the new Homeless Assistance Team, or HAT.
City officials, along with Roanoke Area Ministries, are working together
to support HAT's efforts.
But Owens says the homeless are often hard to identify.

The HAT program is being funded through a three- year, 400- thousand dollar
Authorities have identified the man who plunged off the Peppers Ferry bridge
in Fairlawn as 81 year- old James Marshall Neese of Pulaski.
Neese jumped off the bridge last Thursday.
Rescue teams used boats and divers to continue their search for his body
throughout the weekend.
A crew of Radford Arsenal firefighters finally found it yesterday in the
Investigators are calling Neese's death a suicide.
A West Virginia man accused of shooting his parents to death as they slept
was arrested today in Hillsville.
A driver spotted 21 year old James Drake walking along the northbound lanes
of Interstate 77 and called police.
Drake's sister, Lisa, told police he shot their parents early yesterday,
hours after arguing with them over an automated bank card that Drake had stolen
from one of his sisters.
Drake is being held in the Carroll County jail.
On Wall Street today more fears about rising interest rates, following a
government report showing a jump in February housing starts.
The Dow dropped 59 points.
NASDAQ was down 10 points.
The Botetourt County Board of Supervisors decided against burning a
bridge... and instead voted to save one.
Board members unanimously accepted a VDOT proposal that calls for the
rebuilding of the 43- Y bridge in Eagle Rock.
The decision came much to the delight of town residents.

In other local hoops news; Calvin Preston has resigned as the Franklin
County boys basketball coach.
Preston's main reason for stepping down was that he wants to spend more time
with his family. There are five teams in the Roanoke Valley District, and
Calvin's departure makes him the fifth RVD coach to resign in the last two
years. A replacement has not been named at this time.
