((
Early monday evening, former national security adviser anthony lake asked president clinton to withdraw his name from consideration as director of the C-I-A.
Lake's three-page letter was candid and impassioned. in it, he said "WASHINGTON HAS GONE HAYWIRE."
Lake claimed that he had "sufficient votes for confirmation" - but - that he believed the "process... (is) faced by endless delay." and he had simply "LOST PATIENCE".
Lake's nomination had been a struggle from the beginning. but he appeared to have weathered storms over his investments and a flap over what he knew or didn't know about the Chinese trying to influence American elections. Then this report in Monday's wall street journal - questioned what Lake knew about a lebanese-american oil financier that had donated over $150,000 dollars to the Democratic party and who had been invited to the White House - despite the fact that lake's deputy turned down an initial request for the oilman to meet the president.
The white house admits it was in error, and says lake was never told. but the chairman of the senate intelligence committee saw it as one more sign that lake wasn't up to the job. SEN. RICHARD SHELBY, R- INTELLIGENCE CHMN:THE QUESTION IS 'IS HE THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THIS JOB' IT'S BECOMING MORE AND MORE QUESTIONABLE EACH DAY.
Lake decided that his confirmation was likely to be an interminable process, wrenching for him and his staff, and so pulled the plug.
Mr. Clinton's aides say that he would have been willing to fight - but will accept lake's decision.
