This afternoon the attorneys general of 22 states announced a settlement of
their lawsuits against Liggett Group.
Those suits seek to recover millions of dollars spent on health care for

Even though Liggett admits it marketed a deadly and addictive product TO
CHILDREN, Virginia Attorney General -- and candidate for governor -- Jim
Gilmore says he still has NO plans to sue any tobacco companies.
A Gilmore spokesman says such a lawsuit would devastate Virginia's economy.
Democrat Don Beyer, Gilmore's opponent for governor, says his goal is
keeping cigarettes away from kids. Beyer says to any degree that the Liggett
settlement is helpful in those efforts, he applauds today's developments.
Steven Wayne Cole's lawyer says the death of two year- old Joshua Blevins
was a tragic accident, NOT murder.
Cole's first-degree murder trial is still under way in Hillsville this
Cole told police he was high on drugs when he shoved the toddler into a
Cole said when he was unable to revive Joshua he put him to bed, where he
died of skull fractures.
The boy's mother,

hours of the morning, but never checked on Joshua until late the next
Cole has since changed his story, alleging that Blevins knew what had
happened and SHE put Joshua to bed.

Blevins was convicted LAST March of felony child neglect and is due out of
prison this summer.
Cole faces up to life in prison if he's convicted.
A man from Mercer County- -accused of killing his parents- -will soon be on
his way back to West Virginia.
Jamie Drake was arrested a couple of days ago WALKING along Interstate 77
Drake waived his extradition hearing today in Carroll County and is
already on his back to Mercer County.
Sheriff Harold Buckner says Drake fatally shot his parents with a
high-powered rifle as they slept.
He's also allegedly shot his sister.
For the first time the chief executives of Norfolk Southern and C-S-X
are answering lawmakers' questions about their deal to take over and split up
The railroad executives were on Capitol Hill today, addressing the concerns of
Pennsylvania representatives, who are worried about job losses in their state.

Roanoke Valley Veterans say John Presley has been good for the V- A Medical
Center in Salem.
And today, they staged a show of support for the director.
Members of the Roanoke Valley Veterans Council organized the midday
demonstration at the hospital entrance.
They say Presley has improved patient care and working conditions since he
became director in 1992.

allegations that officials say are not related to patient care.

State police investigators have cleared two local law enforcement officers
accused of using excessive force.
Bedford County Sheriff's Lieutenant John McCain was cleared of any
wrong-doing involving the arrest of David Fielder last Summer.
Glasgow Town Sergeant Leonard Stewart will not face charges. Neither will
the man he arrested in January.
Because Sergeant Stewart was actually out of jurisdiction- -in Rockbridge
COUNTY when he tried to arrest Gary Gibson,
prosecutor Joel Branscom says it could technically be considered assault.
But there were also racial overtones to this incident- -as Gibson indicated
he was not about to be apprehended by a black officer.
It's been a wet, dreary week for most of Virginia, but in one area of
Campbell County, you'd be hard- pressed to hear any complaints.
That's because in the Timber Lake subdivision, every drop of rain means
residents are that much closer to getting their lake back.

(( It's been more than eighteen months since heavy rains washed out the Timber
Lake dam, killing two people downstream and leaving residents high and dry for
two straight summers.
But through a homeowner- financing plan, residents have raised more than
800- thousand dollars to rebuild the dam.. and their community.
Those who designed and constructed the new dam say this one is built to
last: the top of the dam itself is a huge spillway, that allows excess water to
flow over it, but not collapse it.
It's also more solid: more than a thousand cubic yards of concrete on top of
tons of red clay.
