The railroad that used to link the town of Saltville with the Norfolk
Southern main line was once one of the busiest short lines in the nation.
N-S abandoned the route in in 1984, and gave the tracks to the town. Nothing
has rolled on these rails in years. Not until last week, that is.

A crew is now clearing the roadbed, as the first step in re-opening the line
as a new freight railroad.

The workman heaving brush would be the owner of the new company.
He's Bill Pinkerton -- the same Bill Pinkerton who owns the big
Chevrolet-Geo dealership near Salem.
His family has owned short-line railroads for decades.

a deal to buy the line from the town. The land alone will cost him about 200-
thousand dollars. But the fact that his crew is already working on the tracks
shows the negotiations are on track as well.

Indians pulled off a bona fide blockbuster four-player deal today that in the
end sees Justice being served up in Cleveland.

Dave Justice leaves the Braves after 817 games with the team.
He is now 31 years old and he's coming off shoulder surgery that cut short
his 1996 season. The Braves were anxious to get rid of him because of his $12
point 5 million dollar salary.
The Braves also give up 29 year old Marquis Grissom a four time gold glove
award winner as a center fielder.
In return, the Braves pick up the best leadoff hitter in the American
League, in Kenny Lofton.
The explosive center fielder has led the league in stolen bases each of the
past years. His biggest drawback is that he becomes a free agent at the end of
this upcoming season.
The Braves also get another left hander in the bullpen in the deal with
