Earlier this month News-7 first told you how Shorewood Packaging might close
its Roanoke distribution center.
Today workers began getting the official word from the company.

Employees estimate the company employs about 90 people in its transport
division, everything from truckers to office and mechanical personnel.
Shorewood Transport is owned by Shorewood Packaging, a New York based
company which makes compact disk covers.
Workers say Shorewood Packaging has a light manufacturing facility here that
will stay in business.
No one from the company's headquarters would comment.
Consumers borrowing money for everything from new cars to mortgages can
expect interest rates to go up soon.
The Federal Reserve today raised rates by a quarter percentage point, the
first such move by the Fed in over two years.

Southwest Virginian Jerry Kilgore and Chesapeake state senator Mark Earley
have just over two weeks to file their petitions.
Tickets for Virginia's newest lottery game aren't scheduled to go on sale
until April of next year.
But some area lawmakers are already trying to strike out the plan to raise
money for a major league baseball stadium in Northern Virginia.
Blacksburg delegate Jim Shuler says lottery sales are already leveling off,
and the new game would siphon funds away from education.

The lottery is planning to launch the game on a trial basis for nine months.
The College of Health Sciences is still holding out some hope for a
700-thousand dollar appropriation from the state.
A veto by Governor Allen will NOT force the school to close, but will
probably mean another year of tight finances for the Roanoke school.
While the school's close association with Community Hospital continues,
the college is losing its financial support from Carilion Health System.
Officials were hoping for some transitional funding from the state to help
fill the gap, but for the second year in a row, Governor Allen vetoed the
College officials weren't surprised by the governor's decision this time
around, but they were disappointed.
Local lawmakers will attempt to override the veto.

A Martinsville grocery store had to destroy 800-pounds of beef and poultry
after violating state code.
The owner of the Community Market on Fayette Street is accused of buying the
food from other stores and then reselling it-- which is a violation of state
Yesterday, authorities started confiscating the meat.
The investigation began after someone complained.

The railroad that used to link the town of Saltville with the Norfolk
Southern main line was once one of the busiest short lines in the nation.
N-S abandoned the route in in 1984, and gave the tracks to the town. Nothing
has rolled on these rails in years. Not until last week, that is.
A crew is now clearing the roadbed, as the first step in re-opening the line
as a new freight railroad.
The workman heaving brush would be the owner of the new company.
He's Bill Pinkerton -- the same Bill Pinkerton who owns the big
Chevrolet-Geo dealership near Salem.
His family has owned short-line railroads for decades.

He's not quite in the railroad business yet. Pinkerton still has to wrap up
a deal to buy the line from the town. The land alone will cost him about 200-
thousand dollars. But the fact that his crew is already working on the tracks
shows the negotiations are on track as well.

More than three- million women and adolescent girls in this country suffer
from anemia, as a result of iron-deficiency.
About a quarter of a million toddlers have anemia-- at that age iron

Last night Art Lawrence and Travis Cantrell carried the banner for this side
of the state as the all-state team in Group-A was announced.
Tonight it's the Group-Two-A ranks in the spotlight.

After leading his Minutemen to back to back state titles he has been named
coach of the year by the Associated Press.

The opener tonight had Jim Calhoun and his Connecticut Huskies battled ACC

A week before the start of the major league season, the Braves and the
Indians pulled off a bona fide blockbuster four-player deal today that in the
end sees Justice being served up in Cleveland.
Dave Justice leaves the Braves after 817 games with the team.
He is now 31 years old and he's coming off shoulder surgery that cut short
his 1996 season. The Braves were anxious to get rid of him because of his $12
point 5 million dollar salary.
The Braves also give up 29 year old Marquis Grissom a four time gold glove
award winner as a center fielder.
In return, the Braves pick up the best leadoff hitter in the American
League, in Kenny Lofton.
The explosive center fielder has led the league in stolen bases each of the
past years. His biggest drawback is that he becomes a free agent at the end of
this upcoming season.
The Braves also get another left hander in the bullpen in the deal with
pitcher Wayne Embry.
