"Selena" is a combination biography of a life cut short. A tribute and a concert film about the young Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla Perez.
(----------------)
VO-NAT
SUPER=

The movie chronicles Selena's rise from talented youngster to rising superstar.
Jennifer Lopez is riveting as Selena, convincing whether interacting with a close knit family or lip synching to the real Selena's music on stage.
Edward James Olmos is Selena's father Abraham whose own thwarted musical dreams causes him to push Selena into performing even when he fears he will lose her.
Selena's murder is treated almost as an afterthought. The movie is about her life, not her death.
"Selena" gets a "B+".
The movie works best when it concentrates on Lopez, particularly as she brings Selena to life on stage.

John Sailer's (Siler's) attractive, cosy map store set unfolds "Lonely Planet" a sweet, funny, sad story of friendship, and loss.
The friendship is an unusual one, between two very diverse individuals.
Doug Patterson is an excellent Jody, an introverted anxious man who is so fearful of the outside world, he refuses to leave his store.
Branislav Tomich is brilliant as Carl, a hyperactive, fast talking compulsive liar who is constantly dashing in and out.
He is Jody's best friend, his contact to the outside, and the cause of much of his irritation.
The two actors work well together bringing humor, understanding and compassion to the characters they play.
The intimate setting of Mill Mountain's Theatre B, brings this stirring, multi-layered play close to the audience.
Don't forget your hanky. "Lonely Planet" directed by Doug Zchiegner
(Sheegner) continues through March 30.

One warning--the play contains adult situations and language. cutopen
