Good Evening, you're watching NEWS-7 Primetime on WEFC, I'm Connie Stevens.
Police were prepared for the worst, but the stand- off ended quietly tonight with one man in custody.

Roanoke police surrounded the home in the 500 block of Elm Avenue after receiving a report that shots had been fired.
Members of the police tactical unit were called in, while a negotiator spoke with the man by phone.
Ultimately, officers persuaded the man to surrender. He walked out the back door and was taken into custody without incident.

The 39 people who killed themselves in Southern California left farewell messages indicating they wanted to leave their bodies on earth so their spirits could get to heaven, perhaps in a UFO traveling with the Hale-Bopp comet.
Police today released video showing the bodies shortly after they were discovered in a million dollar estate in San Diego County-- a warning, some may find the video very unsettling.

It was neat and tidy, and disturbing. BILL KOLENDER, SAN DIEGO CO. SHERIFF: THIS APPEARS TO BE A PLANNED SUICIDE... SPECIFIC PLACE AND TIME.
The recipe for death, according to the Medical Examiner, was a mixture of phenobarbital and alcohol, placed in containers of pudding and applesauce. DR. BRIAN BLACKBOURNE, SAN DIEGO CO. MEDICAL EXAMINER: DID IT GROUPS OF THREE, THE FIRST GROUP WENT AHEAD, THE SECOND GROUP ASSISTED THEM AND COVERED THEM WITH THIS RED CLOTH WHEN THEY DID. AND THE SECOND TEAM HELPED THE THIRD TEAM.
And there were farewell tapes, messages from the group's leader... I DON'T HAVE ANY CHOICE BUT TO GO FOR IT, BECAUSE I'VE BEEN ON THIS PLANET AND THERE'S NOTHING HERE FOR ME.
Their bodies were removed today for further testing and for positive identification by their families.
The police say they called themselves "Heaven's Gate".
Many were computer whizzes who created internet web sites, like this one.
On their own web site, there is talk of the hale-bopp comet marking their way to heaven, perhaps via a ufo traveling alongside it. standup tag
In addition to the videotaped messages, cult members made it very easy for investigators to figure out who they were.
