appear addicted to tobacco money.
Many take it, in large amounts.
But as Attorney General Jim Gilmore's aligned Virginia with the tobacco
companies in court AGAINST federal regulations on cigarette sales...is he
crossing the line by taking money from Philip Morris?

First of all, what's the latest contribution?
Republican candidate for governor Jim Gilmore flew to New York last week on
a Philip Morris corporate jet, skipped a meeting there with fellow attorneys
general from around the country, and picked up 50- thousand dollars in campaign
donations at a fundraiser hosted by the company, including 20- thousand from
Philip Morris itself.

In meetings with Virginia reporters when he got back, Gilmore said he had NO
plans to withdraw Virginia's friend of the court brief on behalf of the tobacco
companies against the FDA regulations on teen smoking.

An arrest has been made in yesterday's holdup of a Bedford County

Authorities say 19- year- old Chad Michael Pedro (PEH-drow) robbed the
Quik-E food store in Forest early Wednesday morning.
After seeing a videotape of the holdup on t-v last night, an acquaintance of
Pedro's called police to say she recognized the teenager's voice and clothing.
Detectives arrested the teen this afternoon at his girlfriend's home near
He reportedly has confessed to the crime.
Pedro has been charged with robbery and use of a firearm in commission of a
Former animal breeder Valery Green is back in the dog house.

Just a few weeks after a judge said she could no longer own any pets, animal
control officers found a puppy inside a fenced in portion of her property.
Green lost custody of her 120 dogs and cats after a Franklin County judge
ruled she mistreated them.
Authorities have issued a "show- cause" warrant against her and she's
scheduled to appear in court April 8th.
If Green is found in contempt... she could face a stiff fine, or jail time.

The Board heard that more students are taking algebra before the 9th grade,

Special prosecutor Gino Williams had to dismiss the charge today because a

A STATE lab test revealed what a toxicologist described as an unusually
high level of a prescription medication in Long's blood.
D-S-M Engineering Plastic Products has announced it's laying off up to 50
wage and salaried workers at its Wytheville plant.
The company, which used to be called Polymer Corporation, says it is
reorganizing to stay competitive.
That means phasing out some products, and shifting other manufacturing
between its plants in Wytheville and Reading, Pennsylvania.
D-S-M currently employs about 130 workers.
The layoffs will take effect during the second half of the year.

Residents of Autumn Lane in Roanoke say a developer is putting their lives
Now the city has filed criminal charges against Phillip Bane for failing
to comply with construction ordinances.
Bane is working on an 11- home project.
But for more than a year, the city has issued him numerous stop work
Among Bane's alleged violations-- covered storm drains, street debris, and
improper drainage fields.
Bane is scheduled to appear in court a week from today.

This afternoon, Chuck Pound was given the keys to run the girls team as its

Pound is also the Cavaliers head baseball coach and a longtime basketball
assistant at the school.

Area highways are getting a little greener, thanks to some high school
volunteers and a program called "America's Treeways".
Hundreds of redbud and willow oak trees were planted today along several
major roadways in Appomattox, Campbell and Pittsylvania Counties.
It's all part of a joint effort between V-DOT and the National Tree Trust
aimed at beautifying the state's highways.
