As the medical examiner continues the gruesome task of 39 autopsies,
bizzare details of the suicide cult are emerging.
Some male members, including the leader, had been castrated in apparent
pursuit of the group's androgynous immortality.
DR. BRIAN BLACKBOURNE, MEDICAL EXAMINER:

And as officials tried to comprehend the almost incomprehensible, everything
seems to be confirming what everyone believes.
JERRY LIPSCOMB, SAN DIEGO SHERIFF'S DEPT. "WE HAVE 39 SUICIDES".
Nationwide, family of the cult members reacted in shock and disbelief to
the news of the deaths of loved ones.
LOUISE WINANT, CULT LEADER'S SISTER:
In Lincoln Heights, Ohio, the family of cult member yYvonne McCurdy-Hill
stood quietly on the porch as their minister spoke for them.
Their last contact with the 39-year old woman was in august.
Their minister asked for prayers, and the neighbors wondered how a local
girl could end up where she did.
Yvonne was one of the 39 members of heaven's gate, ranging in age from 27
to 72, found identically dressed and covered in purple.
They all had a neatly packed bag next to their bed.
They apparently thought life on earth was coming to an end...and a u-f-o
would deliver them to heaven.
standup
The process of identifying the rest of the 39 cult members will continue all
weekend long, and probably will be wrapped up by Sunday.
Family members are being told to go ahead and make funeral arrangements.
But according to the medical examiner, at this point, few if any family members
plan to come here to identify
and reclaim any of the bodies.
