(( LOUISE WINANT/CULT LEADER'S SISTER I COULDN'T STAND THE THOUGHT - I JUST WANTED TO SAY, THAT ISN'T YOU, THAT CAN'T BE YOU. But it was her brother...66 year old Marshall Applewhite...who authorities believe led 38 others to commit suicide over the past week in a mansion near san diego. And after not hearing from him for more than 20 years...now his sister, like many families of the other vicitms...must deal with the reality of never being able to see him again. WINANT: WE'RE ALL VERY SHAKEN UP BY IT. In Lincoln Heights, Ohio, the family of cult member Yvonne McCurdy-Hill stood quietly on the porch as their minister spoke for them. Their last contact with the 39-year old woman was in August. Their minister asked for prayers, and the neighbors wondered how a local girl could end up where she did. Yvonne was one of the 39 members of Heaven's Gate, ranging in age from 27 to 72, found identically dressed and covered in purple. They all had a neatly packed bag next to their bed. They apparently thought life on earth was coming to an end...and a u-f-o would deliver them to heaven. They were followers of Marshall Applewhite. DICK JOSLYN/FORMER CULT MEMBER: THEY WERE ARTICULATE LOVING PEOPLE...AND IT DISTURBS ME TO SEE THE WAY THE MEDIA IS PORTRAYING THEM. The San Diego County Medical Examiner will work into the weekend performing autopsies on the 39 bodies. Family members who have contacted the coroner have expressed surprise that their loved ones ended up there. CALVIN VINE/MEDICAL EXAMINER'S OFFICE:))
