As people across the nation consider the suicides of 39 California cult members, many are asking "who were these people.?"
One of them was from Abingdon. 26 year old Michael Sandoe went to Abingdon High School. His principal says he was class president his senior year.
Sandoe joined the Army out of high school and served in Desert Storm. His mother says she had no idea he was involved with the cult.
Relatives of other cult members are also having trouble understanding what happened.

Bell Atlantic has extended the local calling service in response to customer demand.
A task force set up through the Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce collected over 700 signatures on a petition requesting the service.
It will mean a slight increase in local rates for Christiansburg customers.
