In a couple of days, phone calls between Christiansburg and Roanoke or Salem will no longer be charged as long distance.
Bell Atlantic has extended the local calling service in response to customer demand.
A task force set up through the Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce collected over 700 signatures on a petition requesting the service.
It will mean a slight increase in local rates for Christiansburg customers.
The toll-free calling takes effect Tuesday.

The Radford University baseball team is 1 and 4 in the Big South after dropping a double header to UNC Greensboro yesterday. It has been a challenging season for former William Byrd ace Chris Carr as well.

An injured pitching shoulder; said to be rotator cuff tendinitis has relegated Carr to a lot of standing around. Coach lew Kent would have used Carr as the starting closer if healthy. Carr has learned a great deal from the adversity.
