The drop is tied to sentencing guidelines and the elimination of parole.

In a couple of days, phone calls between Christiansburg and Roanoke or
Salem will no longer be charged as long distance.
Bell Atlantic has extended the local calling service in response to customer
demand.
A task force set up through the Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of
Commerce collected over 700 signatures on a petition requesting the service.
It will mean a slight increase in local rates for Christiansburg customers.
The toll-free calling takes effect Tuesday.

A major manufacturer of gloves and slippers is bringing new jobs to

Aris Isotoner is moving into the East Bowles Distribution center on Route

D-S-M Engineering Plastic Products has announced it's laying off up to 50
wage and salaried workers at its Wytheville plant.
The company, formerly called the Polymer Corporation, is reorganizing to
stay competitive.
It appeared backers of bringing casino gambling to the Greenbrier had the
deck stacked against them.
But now a new proposal is speeding through West Virginia's legislature, and
the issue appears to be heading for a local referendum.
Checking the financial markets for the week, the Dow Jones Industrial
Average dropped 64 points, the Nasdaq Composite was down five.

The Radford University baseball team is 1 and 4 in the Big South after
dropping a double header to UNC Greensboro yesterday. It has been a challenging
season for former William Byrd ace Chris Carr as well.
