He is accused of killing a mother and daughter at a Roanoke Apartment
Miguel Angel Ortiz was himself shot by police during a standoff last night
at the East Caru Apartments.

Jean it seems to be the end of a running dispute between 23 year old Sharon
Casey, and Ortiz, her ex-boyfriend...
Casey took warrants out against Ortiz last night accusing him of putting
sugar in her gas tank.
About 9:40 she called police saying Ortiz was pounding on her door... police
didn't find anyone.
At 10:22, police came back and found Casey and her mother, 42 year old
Deborah Casey dead.
As police investigated, Ortiz appeared among bystanders with a gun, and the

Police negotiators tried repeatedly to get Ortiz to put the gun down,
offering to let him meet with his mother...

At one point Ortiz does put down the gun, but refuses to walk away from
it... instead, taunting police to come to him.

As time passes, Ortiz's mood changes... As he talks to his mother, his anger
seems to fade... He tells her he loves her, that it's not her fault, and he
tells her he killed Sharon and Deborah Casey.

A few minutes later, Ortiz tells his mother it's his time to go...

police follow him, he walks around the building and begins running across the

The standoff ended as one officer shot him in the stomach.))

Friends and family of the victims are understandably upset and distraught
about this whole matter.
Len Besthoff had an opportunity to speak with some of them today.
Eric a number of folks say 23- year- old Sharon Casey was in the process of
getting her life together.
And both she and her mother are described as kind and hardworking people.

Family members aren't the only ones saying this about Sharon Casey and her
Sharon was well liked at Ameri- Suites, where she worked recently as a maid.
Her mother was a distribution employee at the Roanoke Times, where a
supervisor describes her as a good hearted lady.
This leaves Casey's cousin, Sean Turner even more frustrated.
He says Sharon complained to police more than once about her ex- boyfriend,
Miguel "Mike" Ortiz.

Roanoke authorities will be reviewing police actions during last night's
But today, residents of the area had praise for the way officers handled
the confrontation with Ortiz.

Caldwell says he hasn't decided whether to pursue a CAPITAL murder charge.
More than 40 young people were involved in what's being called a "riot"
inside a Danville juvenile detention home.
They apparently went on a rampage around one thirty this morning after three
employees were locked in a room at gunpoint.

Authorities aren't certain how many of the 42- juveniles took part-- but
Danville police say it appears a majority were involved in one way or another.
Authorities were alerted when someone inside called police.
A swat team quickly surrounded the building-- but it was one of the hostages
who ended the standoff.

Today was Opening Day for the tourist season at Poplar Forest, Thomas
Jefferson's summer home in Bedford County.
That's where tourist officials hope a renewed interest in Jefferson's life
will attract a record number of visitors.
