A school bus and a car collide in Montgomery County this afternoon, killing
the car driver and injuring a student.
Police say 59 year old Linette Schug of Blacksburg apparently crossed a curve
on the wrong side of Bishop Road,
Her Toyota Camry struck Montgomery County bus number one nearly head-on.
Schug died at the scene.
A 12 year-old girl was treated and released at the hospital for neck pain.
The bus driver and the other 12 students on board were not hurt.
The students were on their way home from Blacksburg Middle and Blacksburg
Hillsville police say it appears Donnie Ray Dalton never intended to kill
his 16 year-old daughter yesterday.
When Dalton fired one round from a sawed-off shotgun, his daughter Andrea
was hit by the spray.
Police say her mother, 36 year old Audrey Dalton was the INTENDED victim.
She died instantly.
Police met Audrey and her daughters at the family's mobile home to collect
After finding the doors locked and getting no answer from anyone inside,
police chief Kenny Sharpe walked back within three feet of Audrey to escort her
to the door.
The shooting and standoff, and Donnie Dalton's suicide left him shaken.

Officials from Norfolk Southern continue to inspect a train many think
started a series of brush fires yesterday.
But at this point, NS has not admited up to any responsibility.

Yesterday more than one dozen blazes were burning in Roanoke and Bedford
Counties... scorching about one hundred acres.
No one was injured and there was very little structural damage.
All of the fires were out by this morning.
Forestry officials believe a passing train sparked the blazes because the
trail of fire followed the railroad tracks.
A federal judge throws out a lawsuit from two Lynchburg women who claimed
they lost their assistant voter registrar jobs because they were Democrats.
(IN-ez) Inez Sales and Debra Miller were replaced in 1995 when Carol Spencer
Read took over for registrar Linda Arnold.
Read says no one on the Republican- controlled electoral board pressured her
to let the two women go.
But Sales and Miller sued, and after four days of testimony, Judge James C.
Turk tonight refused to let the jury decide the case.
Turk said the two women were only "praying for sympathy", and that there was
no evidence to support their claims.

Prosecutors say Sykes admitted he stomped on the girl's neck and sprayed
roach spray in her mouth.
Sykes is an ex con- who had served time for sexual assault.
Girl X was attacked at this housing project.
She's now out of a coma, but still can not speak.
International drug informant Javier Cruz pled NOT guilty today.
Oddly enough, these are the same drug-running charges that were lodged
against Cruz in 1991.
He pled GUILTY the first time around- -at a closed hearing a year and a half
As a D-E-A informant, Cruz lived in the Clearbrook section of Roanoke
County- -while spending months in Columbia setting up drug traffickers.
Earl Frith is one of the those charged with helping Cruz conceal cocaine
profits in the late 80's.
The 63 year old land auctioneer is charged with money laundering and
"structuring" bank deals to avoid currency transaction reports.
Frith told the U-S Magistrate today- that quote "This is a preposterous
Greenbrier's bid for casino gambling has apparently failed in the West

The resort was proposing a casino for overnight guests in an effort to keep
rooms full during the winter.
Though the Greenbrier agreed to return gambling profits to state and local
governments, House leaders decided they did not have enough votes to pass the

Michigan's trying again to stop Jack Kevorkian for assisting suicides, but

Test results confirm most of the 39 Heaven's Gate cult members ingested a
lethal combination of drugs and alcohol last week near San Diego.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner says all the members had phenobarbital
in their blood.
Officials have said the group mixed the phenobarbital in pudding

hospital in Dallas as injured star Ricky Craven continued to improve.

encouraging news tonight concerning former Los Angeles Lakers' star Magic
Magic's agent says the level of the HIV virus in Johnson's body is now so
low , it is virtually undetectable.
Doctors say drug therapy is responsible for the recovery. Magic's wife Cookie
insists it is a miracle.
An AIDS researcher says nearly 90 percent of HIV patients who takes the drugs
Magic takes have similar results.
They're some of the oldest families in central Virginia.
But only recently has national historic recognition been bestowed on the
Monacan Indian land in Amherst County.

The Monacans are going forward.
They raised more than 65- thousand dollars to renovate their old schoolhouse
and have begun collecting artifacts and photographs to form a tribal museum, in
hopes of attracting tourists to this remote section of the county.
