Norfolk Southern comes out the apparent winner getting 58 percent of the
company and some key routes.

The man convicted of killing his entire family in Amherst county was
scheduled to die at nine tonight. But the U-S supreme court intervened in the
case of Doug Buchanan.

He was scheduled to die at nine tonight.
But just four hours before his lethal injection, the U-S Supreme Court
stepped in postponing the execution of Douglas Buchanan Junior.

He murdered his father, stepmother and two stepbrothers
Neighbors and relatives in the tiny Naola community hoped this execution
would end their anguish.

But Buchanan's lawyers say it was their client's anguished childhood that
needed more attention.
So the U-S Supreme Court intervened. It's giving itself more time to decide
if it will hear more about Doug Buchanan's state of mind the day of the
Buchanan's lawyers had NOT even asked Governor Allen for clemency.
But the Governor issued a statement anyway, calling the murders deliberate
and vicious and stating the execution should proceed.
Norfolk Southern and C-S-X have now ironed out the main details for a
negotiated breakup of Conrail.
It appears Norfolk Southern is coming out the winner.
As Len Besthoff reports, one of the largest employers in the area will get a
majority of the spoils.

(( Norfolk Southern will shell out nearly six- BILLION- dollars for a 58-
percent share of Conrail's assets, including key routes providing new rail
links to lucrative markets like Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, and

Richmond- based C-S-X will spend upwards of four- billion- dollars for the
rest of Conrail.
It gets new connections in Boston, St. Louis, New York, and Philadelphia.
Norfolk Southern and C-S-X will jointly operate Conrail assets in other
Even with these bitter rivals in agreement, the deal has a long way to go.
The finer details must still be worked out, and federal regulators who want
to make sure competition is preserved could take close to a year to approve the
Conrail carve- up.

A woman was killed following a single car accident in Pulaski County.
It happened on route 11 this afternoon.
51 year-old Phyllis Plotts of Pulaski drove off the side of the road and

The impact embedded the tree into the door.
A doctor who was passing by stopped to lend a hand, and performed a
tracheotomy during the hour Plotts was trapped.
Plotts was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she later died.
A Roanoke County home suffered heavy damage following a fire this evening.
The home on the Grandin Road Extension was heavily involved when

No one was injured in the fire.
It is still under investigation.

The Valery Green saga continues to raise eyebrows in Franklin County.
Members of the Humane Society received copies of registration certificates.
They show some of Green's one hundred-plus animals had a second owner.
The other party-- Green's 15-year-old son Brandon.
It's now up to the Humane Society to decide if the teen deserves
compensation for the dozen or so dogs and cats.

A few weeks ago when a judge ruled she had mistreated her dogs and cats, the
breeder was told she could no longer own an animal.
A few days later, a dog was found inside a fence on her property.
But that same judge ruled she did not disobey the court order... because
