The N-double-ACP says it's gotten 25 to 35 hate calls since NEWS 7 first
made its comments public yesterday.
The group's asking the FBI to investigate.
Carilion is defending itself against accusations by some nurses that it is
understaffing the neonatal intensive care unit at Roanoke Community Hospital.
One nurse told NEWS-7 they're forced to work long overtime hours, and are
violating the state-mandated one nurse per two-point-five babies ratio.
Nurses say as their workload increases, so does the safety concern.
State Health Officials wouldn't confirm or deny an investigation is
underway, but say they've been receiving complaints from nurses for the past
Carilion says it is not aware of any investigation....but says the hospital
has seen a sharp rise in the number of babies in the unit, but say there's an
increased staff to compensate.

Not all the nurses are making these claims... one part-time nurse says
while she's been working more hours, the workload is NOT not unreasonable.
In Botetourt County this afternoon, tears poured down the face of 19- year-
old Timmy Stocks as a judge sentenced him to 17 years in prison.

In September, the teen led police on a high speed chase.
It ended when Stocks crossed the center line of Route 220 and slammed into a
car killing the driver-- Timothy Mays of Covington.
In January, Stocks pleaded guilty to second degree murder.
Today he made one last plea for forgiveness.

The Police chief says the man accused of shooting Cosby to death reportedly
was not chosen in a police lineup by the star witness...the mysterious woman in

In Roanoke, Robert Khatib (Ka-teeb) posted a 100-thousand dollar bond for a
fellow middle-eastern businessman HE believes is innocent.
(Ree-odd) Riyadh Gibriel was co-owner and manager of Mixer's Restaurant and
Lounge in Salem.
The Saudi Arabian native is charged with hiring members of the Abed family
to set fire to the place to collect insurance money.
Khatib had already put up his Brown Derby restaurant to bail out Gibriel's
partner, Ahmad Thiab.

Roanoke Police say a double shooting last winter was indeed a murder
Two men were found shot to death inside a Day Avenue apartment last
Gunshot residue tests determined that 54-year-old Spencer Dickason killed
44-year-old Odell Hairston, and then shot himself.
Investigators offered no information on a possible motive.
Thanks to welfare reform, hundreds of Roanokers have been
stamped out when it comes to food stamps.
The new regulations are designed to make the system run smoother... but
don't tell that to Tim and Sabrina Sigmon.
They say the government is threatening to eliminate their food stamps
because they both work.

Republican Jim Gilmore is officially a candidate.
The attorney general personally filed over 24- thousand names on petitions
today with the state board of elections.
That's to get his name on the ballot as the only candidate for governor in a
June 10th Republican primary.
Gilmore says he will actually kick off his campaign at the end of this month
and resign from his current office June 11th.

The spring version of the semi-annual international furniture show opened
today in High Point, North Carolina.
About 70-thousand people were expected to attend the trade show, which will

A black civic group in Botetourt County has lost its fight to rename a
William Clark is the middle school in question.
It earned its name by way of a contest last year.
Members of the Countywide League balked at that selection-- saying explorer
William Clark had only loose ties to the Fincastle area.
They were hoping to change it to "Central Academy"-- the school's name in
the sixties when it was Botetourt County's only black learning institution.
But members of the school board rejected the idea during its regular meeting

Visitors to Pearisburg's historic Andrew Johnston house were locked out
The home-- built in 1829-- closed today for renovations.
Most of the exterior work is finished.
Now the historical society is ready to get to work inside, in the hope of
reopening this summer.

Topping tonight's Health Check report...a potentially deadly strain of
salmonella bacteria has now reached the U-S.

resistant to antibiotics.
Doctors say the salmonella caused an outbreak among 19 children in Nebraska

Unlike other forms of salmonella that are typically associated with chicken

animals and cats.
Scientists are urging people to take precautions- by washing vegetables,
making sure counter tops are clean and cooking meats thoroughly.
Some researchers think they've found a compound-- known only as GPI-1046--
that could cure Parkinson's Disease.

"Alpengeist" Roller Coaster at Busch Gardens.
