Officials with the State Health Department's Center for Quality Health Care Services won't confirm or deny that an investigation is underway, but will say nurses in the unit have called over the past six months, complaining about staffing...
A spokesperson says the nurses were told...

"If they would give us information about problems with patient outcomes or any issues that would cause poor patient care we would be glad to investigate."

One neonatal nurse, who doesn't want her name used, says she has given the Health Department information about the risk of poor patient care.
She says staffing regularly dropped below the required two and a half to one ratio, down to 3 or 4 to one.
And she said it's talking it's toll on employees...

"The nurses are maxed out, 40 hours overtime over 2 weeks is not unusual. I've heard staff say it's not safe anymore."

Carilion disagrees, saying they have NOT dropped below state staffing standards, but have increased staffing in the unit to compensate for a sharp rise in the number of babies...
