The suspect in a fatal car bombing in Roanoke County two DECADES ago will
NOT be tried for FIRST degree murder.
Frank Helvestine (HELL-vuh-steen) admits he helped another man acquire parts
for a pipe bomb.
HE says he was only trying to "trash" the car- -not kill anyone.
Judge Dianne Strickland struck the word "arson" from the indictment today,
making it a SECOND- degree murder case.

The case is set for trial in late July.
Helvestine allegedly helped arrange the bombing 22-years ago, but wasn't
there when it happened.
The explosion killed a 2-year old child.
Running from the law carries a price--that was the message delivered in a
Botetourt County courtroom.
Nineteen year old Timmy Stocks was sentenced to 17 years in prison for
causing a fatal car crash last fall.

Stocks pled guilty to second degree murder in January.
He was running from police at high- speed when he crossed the center line on
Route 220 and struck a car driven by Timothy Mays of Covington.
Mays was killed.
Yesterday Stocks wept as he apologized to Mays' family.

The N-double-ACP says it's gotten 25 to 35 hate calls since NEWS 7 first

Meanwhile a civic group in Botetourt County has its request turned down by
the school board.
The Countywide League was hoping to change the name of William Clark Middle
School... and replace it with Central Academy.
That was the school's name in the 1960s when it was the only black learning
institution in Botetourt County.

Two men were rescued after their twin- engine Piper plane crashed off the
coast of Hawaii.
Luckily, the pilot and passengers aboard an Aloha Airlines flight

Their small plane had experienced engine failure-- possibly caused by the
extra 400- gallons of fuel it was carrying.
The pilot had to ditch the plane into the ocean using the one good engine.
Neither man was seriously injured.
Carilion is defending itself against accusations by some nurses that it is
understaffing the neonatal intensive care unit at Roanoke Community Hospital.
One nurse told NEWS-7 of being forced to work long overtime hours, and
maintains the hospital is violating the state-mandated one nurse per
two-point-five babies ratio.
Nurses say as their workload increases, so does the safety concern.
State Health Officials wouldn't confirm or deny an investigation is
underway, but say they've been receiving complaints from nurses for the past
