A Roanoke man is accused of shooting his wife.

It happened around nine-30 tonight on Pittsfield Avenue in northwest
Roanoke.
Details are still sketchy, but police say John Sharefield shot his wife in
the chest.
She then called 9-1-1, telling dispatchers she had been shot and that
Sharefield was still in the house.
The victim was taken to the hospital--her injuries do not appear
life-threatening.

Lynchburg Police are investigating two shootings today at Greenfield
Apartments.
Investigators say Cleve Jones of Appomattox was shot in the back as he tried
to drive away from an apparent drug deal.
Bobby Lockett of Red House, Virginia, was also injured in the shooting.
Both were treated and released from Lynchburg General Hospital.
About 12 hours later police were called back to the same apartment complex.
They found 20-year-old Kendric Thomas of Lynchburg with a gunshot wound to
the back.
He had apparently been arguing with another man over money.
Thomas is in stable condition at L-G-H.
No suspects have been arrested in either shooting.

An Alabama court says Judge Roy Moore's hand carved plaqe promotes religion
in a government setting, and is unconstitutional.
25 thousand people turned out to day to say that decision is wrong.
Judge Moore has appealed the court's ruling, and the Alabama House of
Representatives has passed a resolution supporting Moore's position.

project.

Organizers feared soggy weather might slow down the final Tire Amnesty Day.
But nearly 15-thousand tires were dropped off today at designated sites,
raising the two day total to nearly 25-thousand.
Officials originally expected about 10-thousand tires over the two day
period.
Residents of Roanoke City, Roanoke County and Vinton were able to retire up
to 25 tires without charge.
The event was organized by the Roanoke Valley Resource Authority and paid
for by the state.
Officials say they hope to do it again sometime in the future.

The Air Force is using two U-2 spy planes in the search for a missing plane
and pilot.

The search is now focused on a 476-square- mile area southwest of Vail,
Colorado.
The u-2's will use infra-red technology to take pictures of the area.
Ground crews are using snowmobiles to search the rugged terrain but storms
and white-out conditions have made it slow going.
The A-10 Thunderbolt disappeared on April 2, when Captain Craig Button broke
formation during an exercise over Arizona.
He flew the plane northward until it disappeared in the Rocky Mountains.

A Lynchburg man and his two passengers were not injured in a rough noontime
landing at Lynchburg Regional Airport today.
After a three and a half hour flight from Winter Haven, Florida pilot
Holcomb Hughes Senior was attempting to put down his single engine plane when
the landing gear malfunctioned.
The plane, a 19-57 Beech Bonanza, skidded one thousand feet on the runway.
Hughes and his passengers, Ashby Sydnor and Grace Sydnor of Lynchburg,
were not injured.
The plane sustained between five and 15 thousand dollars in damage.

School and PTA officials in Roanoke County want the state to delay new
graduation requirements.

According to published reports, PTA president Barbara Creasy says the
requirements, and new accreditation standards, could undermine local control of
education.
The new standards would require high school students to take more math,
science, and history courses.
Creasy says that could increase education costs, and reduce a student's
opportunities to take art, music, and vocational education courses.
The county school board agrees with Creasy, saying the changes shouldn't be
rushed.
The state school board will vote on the new standards next month.

Kite knocks down this birdie putt at the 15-th hole to go three under par.
Kite shot 66 to finish at 4 under par.
But all eyes on the course were again on Tiger.
And you can see why. Woods has dominated the par 5 holes all week long at
Augusta. At the 8-th hole Woods was putting for eagle again and the shot just
comes up a little short. Tiger birdied the hole and parred 9 to shoot a 32 on
the front and go to 12 under par.
With shots like this one at the 18-th green Woods followed yesterday's 66
with a 7 under par 65 today. His 15 under par total is 9 shots ahead of

((Water poured into the draining system at David A Harrison Field as the
skies opened up for the close of Virginia's spring football season. The number
of Wahoo die hards was down this year due to the weather, but those in
attendance did witness a good show.
Despite the absence of veteran receiver Brian Owen, who sat out the game
with an injured hamstring; the UVa offense showed signs of improvement. Aaron
brooks; the air apparent to the starters throne, threw for 73 yards in the
first half.

The white team or defensive unit, led 4-nothing until this field goal
by Rafael Garcia's replacement Whitney Magers to close the gap to 4-3 in the
first quarter.
In the second quarter; back up quarterback David Rivers hand off to Kirby
Mack went for a touchdown, but the blue offense could not stop the defense.
Tony Dingle waltzes in to sack Brooks and the White goes on to beat the
White 27-21 in a solid effort from a somewhat young defense.

Six days after his first Winston cup Victory, Jeff Burton won the Busch
Grand National Moore's Snack 250 at Bristol.

The number one car was involved in a fiery crash with four laps to go
bringing out the caution.
Burton lead three times for 139 of the 250 laps and he led the final 38
taking the checkered flag under caution.

Organizers of Washington D.C.'s Cherry Blossom festival were determined not
to let Mother Nature rain on their parade.

It did rain on the annual parade, though.
But that failed to dampen the spirits of spectators.
The cherry trees also had to put up with the soggy weather.
They bloomed on time, but since then they've faced high winds and heavy
rains which knocked off blossoms.
The festival draws thousands of visitors every year.
The trees were given as a gift of friendship by the Mayor of Tokyo, Japan
decades ago.
