Altavista police are still investigating the accident that happened
just before six. Police got a report that a person walking on the railroad
tracks near downtown had been hit by a southbound Norfolk Southern train.

Rowland says both victims were male, and appeared to be in their late teens
or early twenties.
Their identities have "not" been released.
Police say the railroad tracks are frequently used by pedestrians looking
for a shortcut to the downtown area.
A huge economic blow for Brookneal and Campbell County--
Thomasville Furniture apparently has decided to close its Brookneal plant by
June, leaving more than 325 people out of work.
Sources say a declining furniture market has forced the shutdown.
Workers reportedly were told this afternoon.
Brookneal has been home to the Thomasville plant for several decades.
An official notice from the company is expected tomorrow.
As Americans race to meet the deadline for paying their taxes-- some
lawmakers in Washington have tried to make it harder for the government to

The State Council of Higher Education has fired its director.
Gordon Davies has been the council's director for 20 years.
He's widely credited for giving Virginia colleges a higher national stature.
But he's had strained relations with Governor Allen's appointees to the

Davies attributes his dismissal to what he called: "a difference in
perception on how you do this job."
Davies resisted continued cutbacks and cost-saving plans the Allen

Lynchburg needs to spend more than a million dollars right NOW to address
some of the city's most pressing recreational needs, according to a recent
City council had discussed taking 1- point- 2 million dollars in unused
flood relief money and applying it to Lynchburg's recreational shortages.

It was April 15, 1912 that the Titanic sank in the cold waters off
