they charged a Pittsylvania County man with making UN-taxed peach brandy.
A FEDERAL indictment identified Amos Law as the brains behind the
organization.
He arranged everything- -including finding a secluded spot and providing the
equipment and raw materials.
He got Lewis Ayers to operate the still.
Law and the others will be sentenced later, along with four other men.

Charlottesville to Roanoke.
The westbound lanes of Interstate 64 over Afton Mountain were closed after a
rock slide.
The road was closed for 16 hours, and traffic has to be detoured.
The highway department reopened the lanes yesterday after a
geologist checked out the conditions.
The rock slide happened Saturday night.

Now that Norfolk Southern and C-S-X are splitting Conrail-- four railroads,
including Canada's largest rail system are looking to make their own tracks in
the Northeast.
The four contend that replacing Conrail with the two Virginia-based carriers
would merely trade a monopoly for a duopoly.
They want regulators to force C-S-X and Norfolk Southern to allow open
access to three key northeastern ports.
