America's two biggest tobacco companies are negotiating a proposed
settlement, to buy out billions of dollars in lawsuits.

It could change the industry forever, at least the way it advertises.
The key players in these secret talks are the attorneys general of six
states, and a White House representative.
Reportedly under discussion: a 300 billion dollar deal that would absolve
the cigarette industry of liability for cigarette related lawsuits.
Instead, a 25-year-fund would be created from which smokers could seek
payments-- a deal Congress would have to approve.

Apparently, the deal includes major concessions from cigarette
manufacturers-- including Food and Drug Administration Regulation of the
cigarette industry, and a ban on billboard advertising.
Also, cigarette makers wouldn't be able to use people or characters in
their advertisements....no more Joe Camel or Marlboro Man.
Whatever transpires, the White House says the deal should strive to reduce
cigarette sales to youngsters.

A victim of a decline in the furniture market--
Thomasville Furniture is closing its Brookneal plant.
As News-7 reported yesterday, the closing effects a factory that's been in
operation since 1977, and currently employs about 320 people.
All that will change by the end of June, when the plant will shut its doors
Plant manager Tim Ramsdell made the announcement yesterday.

Altavista authorities say two teens killed by a train last night may have
been dodging ANOTHER train when they were hit.
The accident happened just before six on these tracks about a half mile from
17- year- old Richard Lancaster of Campbell County and 18- year- old Kevin
Childress of Pittsylvania County died instantly after being struck by a
southbound Norfolk Southern train.
Police say the teens had just crossed the tracks in front of a NORTHbound
train and may not have heard the other train coming.
Apparently, many people use the tracks as a shortcut to downtown.

A Vinton couple is helping the Consumer Product Safety Commission get the
word out about dangerous products-- which are recalled, but REMAIN in
Betty and Tom Jarvis lost their nine-year-old son Tim, when he was
strangled by a mini-hammock.
Eleven other children have died this way, as the mini-hammock-- without a
spreader bar-- wraps around a youngster's neck.

About 30-thousand people are afflicted with Cystic Fibrosis.
Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger has undergone surgery to replace a heart valve.
His spokeswoman says the 49-year-old is expected to make a full recovery.
Apparently, Schwarzenegger wasn't experiencing any problems, but knew he
would have to take care of the condition at some point.

drivers learned from a pro-- exactly what NOT to do on the streets.
Klaus Heimerl, a specialist driving instructor from Germany, put the BMW
through its paces, showing how to do sudden stops and spins.
After saying the trick was easy, he crashed the car.
Klaus, a former German police officer, walked away from the accident--
saying the road was too DRY for the maneuver.
Fortunately his bosses are likely to be sympathetic about the crash.
He's the chauffeur for the BMW chairman.

Over in Vinton-- Seminole District power Rustburg and William Byrd of the
Blue Ridge hooked up in a girls softball game.
