A Giles County man killed his live- in girlfriend today, then turned a high-
powered rifle on himself.
Family members found the bodies of 34 year- old Anthony Meadows and 32 year
-old Susan Jean Sartin this morning in the home they shared in Glen Lyn.
They had gone to check on the couple after a call from Meadows alarmed them.

Fifteen minutes earlier Meadows had dropped off a child at his sister's
Lucas says Sartin had wanted to leave Meadows, but he's not certain that's
what prompted the shooting.
The State Health Department will settle a dispute between some nurses and
Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital.
Some nurses have reported understaffing in the neonatal intensive care
unit, claiming the number of nurses on duty falls below state guidelines.
A Health Department investigation of the complaints is underway and should
wrap up tomorrow.
Carilion officials say the unit is not understaffed, and the babies are
properly cared for.

The Judge gave the Probation office a week to come up with a solution.
Don Terp says Roanoke County doesn't need its police department.
Today, he said the county should return the responsibility for law
enforcement to the sheriff.
Terp wants the voters to decide the issue. He's calling for a referendum in
November of next year.
By doing away with the police department, Terp says the county could save
between one- point- five and three million dollars a year.

In the Ipson family, only Jay and his parents were selected to survive.

making the grade when it comes to educational funding.
