When Israeli police wound up a three-month investigation on
Tuesday, the report they handed prosecutors contained a time bomb
that has now exploded. Their recommendation Israel's Prime
Minister be charged with fraud and breach of trust leaves
Benjamin Netanyahu fighting for his political life.
Also now fighting for life are efforts currently under way by US
trouble-shooter Dennis Ross to rescue the peace accords between Israel and the
Palestinians.
Ross is trying to bring the two sides back to the negotiating
table. He says he'll ignore the scandal and push on.
DENNIS ROSS, US ENVOY: WE FOCUS ON THE ISSUES OF THE PEACE PROCESS AND THE
ISSUES THAT ARE RELATED TO WHAT'S GOING ON WITHIN ISRAEL, THOSE ARE MATTERS FOR
ISRAELIS TO RESOLVE.
But with headlines screaming "earthquake", the scandal has done
the almost-impossible... turned the Israel-Palestinian crisis
into back-burner stuff.
The main allegation is that a key Netanyahu ally, tried to get a
tame attorney general appointed in January to get himself off
corruption charges. The police suspect Netanyahu knew, and went
along with it.
Netanyahu has made no public comment, but he's said through his
aides he's being railroaded and isn't even considering stepping
down.
Even if prosecutors do decide to go ahead and charge Netanyahu there's no
law that says he has to resign.
But the facts of political life could make it impossible for him to hold
on. JS, CBSN, Tel Aviv.))
