A forest fire is still burning in Craig County tonight.
But officials say a serious situation was avoided by the quick actions of a
small crew of fire fighters.
The fire broke out in the Johns Creek area of Craig County this afternoon.
High winds worried fire officials and prevented a plane from dropping
chemicals on the blaze.
About 20 acres have been consumed.
Fire fighters from the Forest Service and the Craig County Fire Department
used bulldozers and hand tools to scratch out fire lines.
They also used fire to FIGHT fire by back-burning.

The fire is not considered contained.
Crews will be needed to keep an eye on hot-spots.
Forest Service Law Enforcement Investigators are on the scene but have not
determined the cause of the blaze.
But officials did say it appears to have started in the middle of the
forest, away from any road or footpath.
No one was injured and no buildings were threatened.
High winds and rough waters proved deadly on Smith Mountain Lake this
morning when a man drowned after his boat capsized and sank.
Around nine-A-M witnesses spotted the man floating amid debris from his
boat, about sixty yards from shore.
Two young men grabbed life jackets and jumped in to save him but were

A snowstorm immediately after the A-10 disappearance has hampered the
search. The Air Force says the snow could be hiding the aircraft.
Local residents say an aerial search won't do much good until some of the

The man who discovered and reported the mass suicide of 39 Heaven's Gate
cult members may wish he hadn't.
Richard Ford... also known as Rio de Angelo claims he's the heir to the

Over the past six months attrition and a voluntary job elimination program
helped G-E downsize its salaried workforce by about 60 positions.
But changing market conditions still forced the company to make an

11 salaried workers received pink slips.

A woman fired by Total Action Against Poverty two years ago has been denied
a trial in federal court.

Chief Judge Jackson Kiser granted a summary judgment today in favor of TAP.
The judge's order refers to a forthcoming "written opinion" that'll explain

A Danville family is fighting to keep their son-n-law from being deported to
Alcides Monges has been living in Danville for about seven years while
attempting to secure citizenship.
He recently married a Danville woman and thought that would secure his place
here in the U-S.
But marriage apparently does NOT guarantee citizenship.
Monges was told this week he'd have to return to his native country and was
jailed in Winchester for violating the order.
Monges' wife and family have appealed to Virginia lawmakers for help.
