A Bedford County judge has rejected Soering's request for a new trial in the murders of Derek and Nancy Haysom.

But judge William Sweeney ruled there was "no" proof two men who killed a Roanoke drifter could also have murdered the Haysoms a week earlier.

Peruvian troops stormed the Japanese Ambassador's compound where 72 hostages were being held by Marxist rebels.
All the rebels-- along with one hostage, and two soldiers were killed, but all the other hostages were freed.
It was December of last year, when leftist Tupac Amaru guerrillas seized hundreds of hostages during a party at the ambassador's residence.
They were demanding hundreds of their comrades be released from jail.

Police in Richmond say two men and a woman have been shot to death in an apartment complex that caters to the elderly and disabled.
As the investigation continues, police are only saying now that one of the dead-- a man in his 30's, had been a longtime resident of the Kensington Gardens apartments.
The identities of the other two, and the circumstances of their deaths, has not been released.

In a frightening series of recent crimes in southwest Virginia, they have been dead.
Wives, girlfriends, children, mothers.

A statewide hotline's been getting 2000 calls a month -- double what it got before the OJ Simpson case -- and on top of what 43 local hotlines get.
But the homicide numbers Virginia keeps show very little's changed in the last five years.
Homicides involving a spouse or boy or girlfriend were 12-point-4 percent of all Virginia murders in 1991.
They're up only slightly as a percentage.
Homicides of other family members are about equal as a percentage of overall murders in the same five year snapshot. Fuzzy is playing in this week's Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic, and while many of the big names on tour will be in the Triad for the event, the celebrities will be not be playing their normal Wednesday round.
The Greensboro Jaycees say they decided to stop inviting the stars because their appearance fees had become outrageous, and the true big names no longer wanted to come to the event.
There will still be a pro-am tomorrow, and the 72 hole tournament itself opens on Thursday with, Chip Sullivan among others in the hunt.

On the same day Fuzzy's comments reminded us all we still have a ways to go, Isiah Thomas, the current general manager for the Toronto Raptors took a big step toward closing the gap.
He has signed a letter of intent to buy a majority interest in the team.
When the deal goes through Thomas will become the first African-American to hold a controlling interest in a major league sports team.
