hand look at the watery remains of Grand Forks. The city of 50-thousand is now
a collection of empty homes, farms and businesses-- empty, except for the
relentless Red River, which now fills some buildings up to their roofs. There
was bright sunshine today, the only thing left for mother nature to offer
after dumping ice, snow, cold, wind, fire and water on this place, all in just
the past month.

Breaking news tonight from Lima, Peru- where 70 hostages are being held.
Gunfire and explosions have erupted at this hour at the Hostage compound in

Heavy smoke is coming from the compound.
It appears Peruvian soldiers stormed the compound- and may have freed some of

A Bedford County judge says convicted killer (Yens Sir-ing) Jens Soering
does NOT deserve a new trial.
Soering was convicted in 1990 of the murders of his girlfriend's parents,
Derek and Nancy Haysom.
Soering had claimed prosecutors withheld evidence of other suspects that
might have cleared HIM.
But judge William Sweeney ruled there was "no" evidence to show that two men
who killed a Roanoke drifter also murdered the Haysoms a week earlier.
And without that connection, that story would not have been admissible at

Soering is serving two life terms for the murders. His girlfriend Elizabeth
Haysom received a 90-year sentence.
Soering's attorney Gail Marshall told News-7 she will appeal Sweeney's

Governor Allen cancelled an appearance in Chatham last night after his
hosts received numerous threatening phone calls.

about the safety of the obesity drug "Redux."
The agency has been reviewing data since last week when critics charged
that the drug could have a brain damaging side effect.
The F-D-A says a study into possible side effects is expected to begin

to only the severely obese.

It doesn't have a name, but many women are familiar with the temporary
absent minded state of pregnancy. California researchers gave 19
women a battery of tests before and after pregnancy looking at everything from
intellectual function to mood.
They found 70 percent of the women experienced some decline in intellectual
function during pregnancy.

It was also found that pregnant women were easily distracted and had
trouble keeping track of more than one piece of information at a time.
Another study conducted in London used M-R-I's-- and found that the brains
of pregnant women actually shrank in size but returned to normal six to ten
months after delivery.
Keep in mind both of these studies looked at small numbers of women.
