(( Marine One cut through a crystal clear sky, as President Clinton took a first hand look at the watery remains of Grand Forks. The city of 50-thousand is now a collection of empty homes, farms and businesses-- empty, except for the relentless Red River, which now fills some buildings up to their roofs. There was bright sunshine today, the only thing left for mother nature to offer after dumping ice, snow, cold, wind, fire and water on this place, all in just the past month. PRESIDENT CLINTON: WHEN I SAW THE PICTURES ON TV OF PEOPLE SANDBAGGING IN A BLIZZARD, THOUGHT MY TV RECEPTION WAS BAD. NO MORE NIGHTMARES, HONEY. Jamie and Pat Thompson comforted their little girl, who'd had nightmares of their home floating away. It hasn't quite done that, but they can't get to their home just yet, and are fearful of what they'll find when they do. PAT THOMPSON/GRAND FORKS RESIDENT: WON'T HIT US UNTIL WE GET IN AND SEE WHAT'S LEFT. At the nearby Air Force base, the president visited with local officials, including Grand Forks mayor Pat Owens, who has lived her peoples' pain for weeks, and who was grateful for the president's visit. MAYOR PAT OWENS/GRAND FORKS: I THOUGHT, WHAT DO I WEAR,.. BRING THAT FORTH. Indeed, the spirit of the people of Grand Forks has kept them going this long. It'll have to get them through the cleanup of their community, which could take months.))
