Norfolk Southern is making some changes at its Roanoke shops, affecting about 85 workers.
The railroad is reducing the number of coal cars it rebuilds, from 12 to 6 each day.
Several of the employees involved will be moving to the locomotive shops; a handfull will shift to the transportation department.
That leaves about 60 workers, who will probably be shifted to train inspections.
An N-S spokesman says he's not sure whether any of these moves will mean fewer jobs in Roanoke.
All this is being done in response to new federal requirements for more train inspections.
