So far the investigation of yesterday's homicide on Interstate 81 in
Montgomery County has not produced an arrest.
57- year- old Estel (ESS-tuhl) Singleton was shot and killed Wednesday
morning at the Ironto rest area.
He had moved to Roanoke from Bluefield about six years ago when his wife
and today former neighbors in Garden City said they considered him a good

Wednesday morning, and authorities are not reporting any major developments in
JonBenet Ramsey's parents say they did not kill their daughter.
The Ramsey's spoke with reporters in Colorado-
Patsy Ramsey says she's appalled anyone would think she or her husband were
involved in the murder.

The Ramsey's spoke publically now that they've been formally interviewed by
JonBenet was found slain four months ago in the family's home.
Negotiations are back ON in the Texas Standoff.

Attorney General Jim Gilmore has reprimanded one of his lawyers for what he
describes as an offensive letter.
A letter from Assistant Attorney General Alison Landry to a Richmond
attorney called the attorney "a bushy-tailed feminist."
Attorney Eileen Wagner was the letter's recipient.
Wagner represents Christy Brzonkala in her alleged rape case against two
Virginia Tech football players.
Gilmore's assistant mocked Wagner for, quoting the letter, "chronic
tantrums" and a "hopelessly manipulative" style, along with the feminist slur.

Botetourt County residents have started seeing some unfamiliar and...in many
cases... unwanted faces at their doorsteps.
It's been FIVE YEARS since appraisers have been out in that area assessing
individual property values.
But the process started up again a few weeks ago.
Because Botetourt County operates under the General Charter Rule of the
Commonwealth, it's required to conduct property appraisals in 4 to 6 year
While that might make it easier for the county... it COULD mean
significantly higher taxes for some residents... depending on the tax rate.

It will take a year until all of the assessments are complete... and they
won't be put into place until the start of the 1998 fiscal year.
Union employees at railroads across the country staged informational pickets
Specifically, workers are upset about higher standards being proposed to
qualify for certain disability pensions.
The Railroad Retirement Board has until the end of July to complete the
disability revisions it's working on.
The unions have hinted they may go on strike if all the parties involved
don't reach a compromise.

The strongest evidence yet that exercise can protect women from breast
cancer comes from today's New England Journal of Medicine.
The researchers, from Norway-- tracked some 25-thousand women for an
average of 14 years.
They found that women who exercise at least four hours a week have about
one-third lower than usual the risk for breast cancer.
The women in the study who were thin, under 45 years of age, and who
exercised regularly had the lowest risks of all.

Emergency room nurses from Columbia Pulaski Community Hospital presented a
program to warn students of the dangers of drinking and driving.
It's a new nationwide effort started by E-R nurses who struggle daily to
save the lives of victims in alcohol-related crashes.
