Around 4:15, this Peterbilt tractor trailer was headed south on Route 501 when it reportedly struck a woman riding her bicycle in the same direction.
The woman.. who police believe was in her 20's or 30's.. was thrown from the bike and killed instantly.
A medic crew transported the 71- year- old truck driver to the hospital.. police said he was emotionally shaken by the accident.
The identities of both the cyclist and the driver have not been released.
No word yet on whether any charges will be filed.

The investigation into the murder of 57 year-old (Es-tull) Estel Singleton continues.
Singleton was found shot to death Wednesday at the Ironto rest area.
Today police returned to the scene to use Roanoke County's state-of-the-art crime scene mapping device, one of only two in the state.
And they joined forces with state police and Montgomery County sheriff's deputies to scour the area for any evidence that may have been overlooked.

A preacher apparently made a difference when it came to sentencing his nephew today in Roanoke.
Eighteen year old Robert Reed will serve a two- and- a- half year term in prison for manslaughter.

Property owner Phillip Bane wants to develop the Autumn Lane property.
So he allowed the Virginia Department of Transportation to dump construction debris there as fill.
Residents say some of this material did not meet federal regulations and now a sifting process has begun to remove the inappropriate material.
Bane is already facing criminal charges relating to the Autumn Lane Site. He's scheduled to appear in court May 13th for failing to comply with city ordinances there.

On one occasion, the owner of Club 221... formerly known as Impaxx... allegedly told an employee not to let any black customers in.
Owner Martha Curry denies she's a racist.
But that wasn't enough to stop protests from the NAACP.
There are some activists, however, that say allegations like these are nothing new... and that there are more important racial issues to tackle.

The American Psychiatric Association has released guidelines designed to help families of Alzheimer's patients.

The Association wants physicians to start writing prescriptions-- telling their Alzheimer's patients not to drive.
California is the only state that requires doctors to report Alzheimer's patients to the D-M-V, so authorities can consider revoking their license.
The recommendation may be important-- as a recent Scandinavian study published in the Lancet, looked at the brains of elderly car crash victims.
They found a third of them showed clear evidence of Alzheimer's Disease.

It's been nearly three months since a group of Danville National Guardsmen were deployed as peacekeepers.
The time apart has been hard for the soldiers-- especially those with wives and children.
Roger Gilreath's son, Tyler, was less than two months old when he left for Bosnia.
His wife, Melissa, says phone calls and letters, on both sides, make all the difference.
