A proposed 161 million dollar budget for Roanoke city was under the

Most comments centered on a proposed "city-wide youth application."

An elderly woman is in very serious condition tonight as a result of a fire
at the Melrose Towers apartments.

Fire officials say it appears the blaze started on the couch.

19 year old freshman John "Jack" (BAUW-DEN) Bowden fell out of a second
A University spokesman says Bowden had been drinking.
He was alone in the room when he fell... some students passing by the dorm
Bowden was taken to Stonewall Jackson Hospital with head injuries.
He was then flown to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he died.
Bowden was from Connecticut.
Friends and family are mourning the death of a popular Heritage High School
teacher who was killed in an accident Friday night.

36- year- old Suzanne Dawn LaReau (luh-ROH) was riding her bicycle on
Boonsboro Road in Lynchburg when she was struck by a tractor trailer.
LaReau died instantly... police are still investigating the accident.

math teacher and head coach of the girls varsity basketball team.

The Better Business Bureau is warning homeowners about possible scams this

And it may have raised thousands of dollars for a Roanoke crisis center, but

Dan River Mills is closing one of its Danville plants.
The company is shutting down its Riverside weaving facility-- where it
currently employs 350 people.
The company plans to phase out the the plant over six months, and some
Riverside employees will be transferred to the company's Schoolfield complex.
But Dan River says there WILL be a net loss of jobs after this closing.
The company says the shutdown is part of its multi-million dollar
modernization effort at its Danville facilities.
Approximately 45-hundred employees work for Dan River in Danville.
On the campaign trail, Ken Stolle (STAHL-EE) has talked with Republican

The NBA playoffs resumed tonight down in Houston, with the Rockets and the
Sonics opening up their best of seven western conference semi-finals at the

Byrd head coach Jeff Highfill was understandably a little anxious tonight as
