Not everyone is welcoming an expansion at the Roanoke Rescue Mission.

Roanoke's Rescue Mission wants to open its doors much wider.
It's planning a five-million dollar expansion, which includes housing for
drug-addicted women with children.
But some residents are NOT feeling very neighborly about the idea.
They fear existing problems in Southeast Roanoke could escalate.

Meanwhile, the group says it has the support of other neighborhood groups,
and plans to continue its fight to prevent the expansion.
A neighborhood grocery store in southeast Roanoke will apparently have to
move, now that a deal to sell the property is in the works.
The owners of the 9th Street Galaxy say they haven't received final
notification from the property owners,
but a spokesman for Revco confirms that the drugstore chain has signed a
deal to put a new store on the site.

Owners of the grocery store say they would like to relocate, but finding
another site in southeast Roanoke will be difficult.
The new Revco will carry a limited line of groceries including dairy
products, but no fresh produce or meat.
One person is dead following a collision between a car and a truck loaded
The driver of this hatchback was exiting Interstate-81 onto route eight in
Police say the car pulled out in front of a Marshall Concrete truck and was
hit broadside in the driver's door.
The driver of the car died en route to the hospital.

Just moments before-- a tractor trailer loaded with lumber overturned on
I-81 in Christiansburg.
The driver was pinned between the cab and the guardrail, but according to
rescue personnel, his injuries are not life-threatening.

The 18 year old accused of killing Ennis Cosby- pleaded not guilty in Los

Prosecutors say Markhasev gunned down Bill Cosby's son Ennis in January.
27 year old Cosby had stopped on a freeway exit to change a flat tire.

Markhasev is a reputed street gang member and a Ukrainian immigrant.
It's the defense's turn to question a key witness in the Oklahoma City
Timothy McVeigh's lawyers are trying to emphasize that Michael Fortier is
testifying under a plea agreement- and that his story has changed since the
Fortier delivered strong testimony yesterday saying McVeigh told him about
plans to bomb the building- even boasted about turning a truck into a bomb.
The defense is trying to damage Fortier's credibility, saying he used and
sold drugs and lied to authorities.

Roanoke City Council members and the mayor will see fatter paychecks next
Last night council approved the 1997-98 budget including its own pay raises.
Lynda Wyatt and Nelson Harris were the only council members to vote against

Typically, patients suffering chronic pain don't have too many options for

They're worried about the proposed new standards of accreditation for
Virginia's public schools.
Many critics fear more emphasis on academics and less time for electives may
actually hurt some students.

battle with cancer.

strain of E. coli bacteria.
