Pay raises for Roanoke city council members may get another look.

Councilman Jack Parrott voted for a pay raise, but now he's changed his
The Republican is now asking city council to reconsider the 14-percent pay
Monday night, Council voted five to two for its own pay raise, plus a
28-percent salary increase for the mayor.

A robber who fled with cash from a Wytheville bank is still at large
Police say a white or hispanic male handed a teller a note demanding cash
at the East Main Street branch of Premier Bank.
The teller filled a bank bag with an undetermined amount of money and
handed it over.
The man left in a dark gray, four-door Mazda, believed to be heading North
on Interstate- 81.
The Virginia Democratic Party won't say if it's in financial trouble -- but
it just laid off four out of eight staff members in the state office.

Dolan says he's doubtful that privatizing the rest areas, as republican

Theodore Kaczynski's family says.
Today the government filed papers that it will seek the death penalty if a
jury finds Kaczynski guilty in the Unabomber case.
Kaczynski's family turned him in to authorities.
He goes on trial in November for two of the Unabomber killings.
The family's attorney calls the decision to seek the death penalty a

pledged to enforce it.

Federal health officials today approved the first medication designed to
ease the pain of quitting cigarettes without using nicotine.
Zyban has actually been around for several years.
Called Wellbutrin, it's used as an anti-depressant.
But in trials, it proved successful as a stop-smoking aid.
The manufacturer found 49-percent of smokers who used Zyban were
successful at kicking the habit for a month.
That compares to 36-percent of people using a nicotine patch.
Zyban works much like nicotine-- releasing chemicals in the brain that
produce feeling of well-being.
But Zyban isn't addictive-- and it's said to dull withdrawal symptoms and
reduce the habitual craving for cigarettes.

Researchers say it does have side effects--
Most commonly, dry mouth and insomnia.
Most women taking birth control pills know all too well the costs of
They're not covered by most insurance policies.
But there's an effort underway on Capitol Hill to try and change that.
Birth control pills cost about 300-dollars a year for most women.
That's one reason women of child-bearing age pay about 68-percent more in
out of pocket medical expenses each year, compared to men of the same age.
Now, legislation has been introduced that would require insurance companies
to cover the costs of prescription contraceptives the same as they do for other
drugs and devices.
