Federal health officials today approved the first medication designed to
ease the pain of quitting cigarettes without using nicotine.
Zyban has actually been around for several years.
Called Wellbutrin, it's used as an anti-depressant.

The manufacturer found 49-percent of smokers who used Zyban were
successful at kicking the habit for a month.
That compares to 36-percent of people using a nicotine patch.
Zyban works much like nicotine-- releasing chemicals in the brain that
produce feeling of well-being.
But Zyban isn't addictive-- and it's said to dull withdrawal symptoms and
reduce the habitual craving for cigarettes.

the 1997 Don Holliday Scholarship this morning at the Patrick Henry hotel.

He also has a 3 point 29 grade point average that puts him 36-th out of 255
