OUT Q=HASN'T BEEN POPULAR.
The mayor admits some of his constituents aren't happy, but he's sticking by
his decision to give Roanoke City council and himself a raise.
Good Evening, This is NEWS-7 PRIMETIME on WEFC.
I'm Connie Stevens.
Following a flood of negative phone calls, David Bowers is pushing to put
the city council pay raise issue on hold.
Bowers says he will ask council members to delay their vote until June
Monday, council members gave the mayor a 28-percent pay hike while padding
their own paychecks by 14-percent.
Bowers says he deserves the extra money.

Bowers recognizes there's something suspicious about council members giving
themselves pay raises.
He says public input is welcome.
In the New River Valley pay raises are in the works for members of the
Montgomery County board of supervisors and Pulaski County school board members.
The Pulaski board voted itself a raise for the first time since 1984,
doubling members' pay to 18- hundred dollars a year.
Montgomery supervisors voted to increase THEIR pay to nine thousand dollars
a year, a 30- percent jump.
Montgomery's compensation will be the maximum the state allows for a county
of its size.
Not for sale-- that's the decision by Advance Auto after several months on
the selling block.
Instead the Roanoke-based auto parts chain is concentrating on expanding.
It's being called a partial victory in Roanoke, because for now the corporate
headquarters will remain within the city limits.
In a brief statement, Advance Auto Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Nick
Taubman said..."A sale of Advance would not serve its best interests at this
The company didn't rule out a sale altogether, but would not elaborate.
