The mayor of Roanoke is backing down on the issue of pay raises in the face
of overwhelming public sentiment.
Andrew Freiden is in the NEWS-7 newsroom, fresh from a late- afternoon news
conference in the mayor's office.
Keith, the mayor says phone calls to his office were running strongly
against pay raises for city council and the mayor.
And today he decided that he can't go ahead with the planned 28% pay raise
for himself or the 14% raise for city council.

The Mayor says the proposed pay raises for the City's top administrators

He says everything is still on the board-- including having NO pay raise at
Keith, Mayor Bowers says the rest of the budget will remain untouched-- All
other city workers will still get their average 3.3 percent raise.
Appomattox County's top prosecutor says he hasn't decided whether to seek
the death penalty against an 18- year- old man charged with murder.
Brandon Wayne Hedrick was ordered held without bond after at his appearance
this afternoon in Appomattox General District Court.
He's charged with capital murder in the shooting death of Lisa Yvonne Crider
on May 11th.
Hedrick's alleged accomplice, 18- year- old Trevor Andrew Jones is facing
murder, abduction and firearms charges... his bond was set at a half million
Prosecutor Tommy Lawson says both men are potential flight risks.
They were arrested Saturday at this house in Lincoln, Nebraska, six days
after Crider's body was found in the James River.
They waived extradition back to Virginia to face the murder charges.
Both were appointed attorneys today.
A preliminary hearing is set for July.
The group that represents 55- thousand of Virginia's 80- thousand public
school teachers says Don Beyer would be best for state schools.
The Virginia Education Association says Beyer's legislative record won the

A restaurant in New Castle is trying again to sell liquor- by- the drink.
Today the owner of Briz's restaurant filed his request to put the issue on
the ballot for the November election.
This time, Jim Greenway says he's appealing to voters county- wide for a
referendum to legalize the selling of mixed drinks.

Cave Spring got two runs in the bottom of the first and held off Franklin
County to capture the Roanoke Valley District tournament title 3 to 1.

Keith Lockhart hit a two run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lead the
Atlanta Braves over Montreal 3 to 2.

legs out the infield hit driving in a run and the Braves took a one to nothing
