patch a million dollar hole in their budget for the remaining fiscal year.

The murder trial of Earl Bramblett is being postponed-- to give the defense
No new date has been set but the trial will almost certainly be put off
until sometime this Fall.

Bramblett is accused of arson and murder in the deaths of a Vinton family
If the jury convicts the 55-year old suspect of CAPITAL murder, jurors may
then get to hear evidence of earlier sex and drug crimes.
That's why the judge granted a delay. Bramblett's lawyers say they need
three or four months to investigate those other allegations.

N-B-C Sportscaster Marv Albert says the sex and assault charges against him
His indictment stems from an alleged incident at this hotel in February.
A 41 year old woman says Albert bit her several times and forced her to
perform sexual acts.
Albert says he never got a chance to tell authorities his side of the

Roanoke's annual Festival in the Park DID kick off tonight with a Mardi Gras
event-- but some people thought the whole thing was cancelled.
Confusion over the 28-year old event began this morning.
Listeners of a local radio station were led to believe Festival In The Park
had been called off
by Mayor Bowers, out of frustration over his defeat on a controversial pay
The city issued a statement saying the allegations of the closing of local
events are "false rumors".

A spokesman for J-93-F-M explains that listeners misunderstood a

The Wythe County Sheriff's Department was glad to see Governor George ALlen
The sheriff got 95-hundred dollars from the sale of assets seized in three
different drug busts.
In those busts, Wythe County deputies confiscated two vehicles and nearly
five-thousand dollars in cash.
The governor says the county's efforts are helping keep drug dealers out of
other parts of the state.

The governor's office says state police have been increasing their efforts
to stop drug dealers on interstate highways and major roads.
More academic courses and fewer electives in Virginia schools are still
three weeks away from adoption.
But state superintendent Richard LaPointe says he will release a compromise
Standards of Accreditation proposal by June Second.
State board members voiced some disagreement today.

The board has received almost five thousand letters defending the

Tom Leggette wants to serve another term on the Roanoke County School
And like his first bid in 1994, his campaign enjoys strong bipartisan
Leggette announced his plans this morning outside of Hidden Valley Junior
He's running as an independent for the Windsor Hills seat, but he has the
support of both the Republican and Democratic County Chairmen.

An attorney and former prosecutor, Leggette has two children in county

The millionare was a high school dropout at 15.
He cautions students to stay in school and avoid drugs and alcohol.

Lynchburg is expected to host thousands in its downtown this weekend, for
Virginia's first regional state fair.
The Fair By the James replaces the FESTIVAL By The James which ran for ten
years along the city's riverfront.
Organizers say the regional fair has a lot more to offer and will give
attendees a taste of the Virginia State Fair.

Despite no-smoking rules and public service campaigns, the percentage of
adults who smoke is holding steady in the 1990's.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the percentage of
Americans 35 and older who smoke has hovered around 24 percent from 1990 to
1994...its latest figures.
According to the C-D-C, tobacco use is stalled possibly because of the lower
price of cigarettes.
It's estimated that smoking killed more than two million people between 1990
Straight talk on sex, drugs and violence today for many ninth graders in
the Roanoke Valley.
They heard from Dr. Stephen Sroka (su-ROE-kuh), a nationally known author
and consultant, who teaches in the Cleveland Public School system.
Speaking today at eight schools in western Virginia, he delivered a frank
message about the consequences of sexual activity, drug use and violence.

Primetime sports has learned this evening that Fred Wagner has been offered
the head football coaching job at Liberty high school.
Wagner is currently an assistant football coach at William Byrd. He was
also instrumental as a head coach in turning around Northide's wrestling
program before returning to Byrd a few years ago. Wagner replaces Mike
Scharness, who took the head football job at Rustburg.
Also, late this evening; The Roanoke County school board and Glenvar high
school announced it's new head girls basketball coach. Bryan Harvey replaces
Dennis Layman as the lady Highlanders head coach for next season. Harvey served
as the Glenvar JV boys and girls coach this past year. Bryan went to Glenvar
and then attended Roanoke College.
For the first time since 1969; the Virginia Tech Hokies have won an NCAA
tournament baseball game; beating Southern Cal 3-2 in the South 2 Regional.

USC came in ranked 11th in the country. Matt Reynolds hit two homeruns on
the day, his second came with the game tied at 2 all in the top of the ninth to

Over at Cave Spring this evening, The Roanoke Valley Districts top two
teams Franklin County and Cave Spring battled for the tournament championship.

The Eagles beat the Knights three straight times during the regular season.
The Knights would take the lead in the top of the second. Patrick Connelly
hits a shot to left field with the bases loaded scoring two runs and Cave

But the Eagles put together a big inning in the bottom of the second it
started when Bobby Basham belts this solo homer over the centerfield wall for a
solo homer Franklin County trailed 2 to 1.

Then; Marcie Poff hits a single to right centerfield a runner scores and
Byrd led Salem 4 to nothing.
Salem came back to tie it in the top of the fourth. Meaghan Cookston hits a
single to centerfield and two runners cross the plate and the Spartans trailed
4 to 3. But Byrd scores in the 8th to win the tournament title.

The Stars were shining over at the Marriott tonight as the 47-th annual
B'nai B'rith Athletic and Achievement awards were presented.
30 student athletes from area high schools were nominated for the awards.
Sarah Moore of Lord Botetourt high school received the female award.
Moore played on two state championship basketball teams at Botetourt and she
will continue her education at Campbell University.
