a difficult rescue continues at this hour.

An Appomattox man who helped local veterans process their disability claims
died in a car crash yesterday in Franklin County.
54-year old Curtis Brown was returning from an Am-vets ceremony in
Collinsville when his car ran off Route 220 and struck several trees.
Brown himself was a U-S Navy veteran.
He'd worked in the Roanoke Amvets office for more than five years.
It's a silent killer- Today carbon monoxide claimed the lives of three
children in California.
They died in the back of the family pick up truck during a trip home from
the holiday weekend.
The family was on its way from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
But when the parents checked on their sleeping children they would not wake

A Heineken heist in Miami had police chasing a stolen beer truck right into
the drink Monday-
The man driving the truck led police on a low-speed chase- but left in his
path- a trail of smashed beer cases.
The chase lasted some 30 minutes before the truck crashed into a muddy
The thief who was driving seemed to have disappeared- so police thought he
might have escaped or drowned.
But scuba divers found him hidden in an air pocket under the truck.
They dragged him through the muddy water to safety and then to jail.

An overloaded plane was apparently NOT what caused the crash that killed
five skydivers yesterday.
The single-engine plane slammed to the ground near Homestead, Florida --
Officials at first said the aircraft could have been overloaded.

But now a federal investigator says it appears the weight of the pilot,
passengers and gear was within safety limits.
The National Transportation Safety Board says the plane probably went into
a spin because the airspeed had dropped too much.
One parachutist survived the crash.

Her father, Navy Corpsman Frank Davis, succumbed to lung cancer in March.
A veteran of three wars, Davis served two tours of duty in Vietnam.
Just four months before his death at the V-A Hospital in Salem, the retired
chief petty officer was officially declared a victim of the chemical defoliant
U-S warplanes sprayed on the jungle in Southeast Asia.

The man who represents the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Southwest
Virginia- -Ike Payne says: Chief Davis doesn't qualify. The injury must be
caused by enemy action.

There HAVE been instances where friendly fire casualties received the medal,
but only in cases where the mis-directed American firepower was INTENDED to
take out the enemy.
Gulf War veterans won the Purple Heart for exposure to chemical gases- -but
that came from the Iraqi's.

Frank Davis JUNIOR has jumped aboard the crusade launched by his sister.
A veteran himself, Frank, Junior feels their effort is hampered by the fact
that the Vietnam War was so unpopular.

It could actually be twice that number. 39-thousand Vietnam vets are now
collecting disability compensation for their exposure to Agent Orange.
At least some members of the Order of the Purple Heart feel redefining
what's meant by "combat injury" cheapens the medal.

The Navy says Chief Davis doesn't qualify for a Purple Heart under current
It would take an act of Congress to change that.
A best-selling author has a bone to pick with some southern heritage
Kenneth Davis specializes in question-and answer- style books designed to
make history interesting to casual readers.
In his book "Don't Know Much About the Civil War," Davis takes issue with
southern history fans who argue that slavery was a minor factor in the war.
