An Appomattox man who helped local veterans process their disability claims died in a car crash yesterday in Franklin County.
54-year old Curtis Brown was returning from an Am-vets ceremony in Collinsville when his car ran off Route 220 and struck several trees.
Brown himself was a U-S Navy veteran.
He'd worked in the Roanoke Amvets office for more than five years.

When the magnesium mixed with oxygen- that resulted in several spectacular explosions.

It took 120 firefighters almost seven hours to get the blaze under control.
When rubber burns, its oily nature makes it difficult to extinguish-
Fire crews had to use a special foam to put out the blaze.
The fire began late last night burning into the morning.

A Heineken heist in Miami had police chasing a stolen beer truck right into the drink Monday-

The man driving the truck led police on a low-speed chase- but left in his path- a trail of smashed beer cases.
The chase lasted some 30 minutes before the truck crashed into a muddy lake.
The thief who was driving seemed to have disappeared- so police thought he might have escaped or drowned.
But scuba divers found him hidden in an air pocket under the truck.
They dragged him through the muddy water to safety and then to jail.

The Baltimore Orioles won their seventh game in their last nine today with a come from behind 8-to-6 victory over New York.
The Orioles got started with this Brady Anderson solo homerun, but they would also need to come up with six runs in the seventh inning to overcome a 6-to-2 New York advantage.
Anderson had a double in that frame to propel the O's to the 8-to-6 win.
